My 85 Iroc Build
Hey guys, it's been quite some time since I was on here. A few years ago I sold my 85 z28 and said i'm done with thirdgens. There is now two thirdgen camaros in my garage...It's impossible to stay away.
Anyway, here's how I got it. It had an awful wing and fake hood vents to compliment the stock fake hood vents. I removed both of those items and decided to pull the motor. One pic is how much crap I took out of the engine bay (The cloth was stapled around the spark plug wires). I'm glad I decided to pull the motor, the radiator was filled with water and there were about 6 wires pinched under the valve cover along with a lot of other small wiring issues.
The plan is to clean up and paint the engine bay, floor. New exhaust, new suspension, new brakes, new fuel lines, etc. I just want a nice daily driver so the 305 tpi is going to stay, along with the 700r4.
Let me know if you have any advice or ideas...

Re: My 85 Iroc Build
Looks like a pretty straight clean car..original paint? It looks like it has leir seigel(spelling) interior.
How ever thought that wing looked good when they installed it watched fast and the furious to many times.
I would suggest a good set of sub frame connectors to help stiffen up the car.

Re: My 85 Iroc Build
Yeah the car has the lier Siegler Camaro camaro camaro seats. I don't know how I feel about them yet... :/
I planned spohn subframe connectors, and their tubular lower control arms and panhard bar. Seems stupid to box my own when they are that cheap.
The car is decently straight and clean. It has a few scrapes/nicks but it's a 2 owner car before me with under 100k on the odometer. Owner said it had never seen snow and it looks to be true. For $1700 I cannot complain!

1700 you can't go wrong. The interior is a take or leave it. Some people love it.
I actually used jegs bolt in sub frame connectors. I bolted them in and fully welded as well. They tuck way up in and follow/touch the pinch weld on rocker. So I full welded them to the rocker seam and the front floor and near the control arm in the back. They look like factory set up and not out of place at all

Re: My 85 Iroc Build
Did quite a bit the past couple weeks. Basically the engine bay and floorboards/rear end/fuel tank, etc is all out. I've been wire wheeling the rear at my work, just waiting for the por15 to come in the mail. After that, I'll be prepping the floor and bay for paint too.
My only issue is I cannot decide what motor I want to put in the car. I was originally planning to stay with the tpi, but now with all this work I don't want to put the 305 back in. I was thinking ls motor but I don't want to spend that much. Looks like it'll be a carb'd 350 or 400.

I'm going to use por15. I was thinking about using black, then their top coat, then a gunmetal paint. Im undecided now and thinking about leaving it just por15.

Re: My 85 Iroc Build
Spent all weekend in the garage and got pretty far. I got rid of the undercoating in the wheel wells, prepped the engine bay/floors/wheel wells for paint, and painted it all on sunday. I'm pretty happy! Next on the list is rebuild the t5 that i have from another car that I parted out, and start buying some of the parts I need for the drivetrain. I also picked up a fresh 406 on saturday!

Re: My 85 Iroc Build
Forgot too that I finished up the gas tank as well. I will be painting the sway bars and wonderbar this week, along with the torque arm and driveshaft. The heat shields are cleaned and ready too. PROGRESS

Re: My 85 Iroc Build
Keeping the 305 was the original plan but I decided since I'm doing all this work I might as well have a little bit of power to go along with it. It should still be a reliable fun car to enjoy any day of the week.

Re: My 85 Iroc Build
Update:
I finished the machining involved for the ls1 front brake setup. Also painted more stuff and ordered tubular rear suspension, camber/caster plates, tie rods, ball joints, a posi carrier from John in ri, and the rear ls1 brake backing plates with calipers and cables. Gotta let my wallet cool off for a bit now!

Re: My 85 Iroc Build
Id sell it to you but I already got $40 for it on Craigslist. Haha. It ended up being a win win because I think that deterred people from looking at the car.

Re: My 85 Iroc Build
So funny turn of events. I sold the TPI motor/harness/ecu and trans to a guy to swap into his monte carlo. Sadly, he was not able to do the swap so was at the mercy of a shop. The first shop that I delivered the motor/trans to for him put it in the car but didn't do anything else and screwed him over. They didn't go any further with it because they had to vacate their shop (didn't tell him until the last minute). He took it to two more shops with the same type of luck so he finally gave up. I ended up buying it all back from him including the car. I'm now contemplating putting the original motor back in my iroc and saving the 406 for my 92.

Re: My 85 Iroc Build
Awesome man! I have always wanted a monte of this era next to my thirdgen. He paid about $750 for all the stuff from me, and I gave him $1200 for everything back including the car. I figure I can sell the wheels for a couple hundred. I'm on the lookout for a SS front end now, and a set of decent doors.

Re: My 85 Iroc Build
Not a bad deal.. SS nose/doors shouldn't be hard to find on craiglist
I'm actually in the process of doing drop spindles, and springs to get rid of the 4x4 look on mine. Hoping it doesn't ruin the decent ride it has
Good job on cleaning up the iroc. Did you just paint the underneath after cleaning? Dupli color bed liner(60 a gallon)out of a shultz gun works very well. Goes on semi textured

Lowering that car should make it look killer!
I painted the floors for now with por15. I did the chassis coat top coat as well. We will see how it lasts.
