Word of warning; Bexar County Sherrifs and some of the small cities WILL ticket for having the license plate in the window. I know the state statute only says "must be displayed to the front of the vehicle", but they interpret that as "physically bolted to the front of the car". Last time I barely got out of a $200 ticket for the same because the deputy pulled me over in Converse, but tried to send me to court on the South side (flagrant jurisdiction violation). The magistrate ~grudgingly~ dismissed it, but still had to go through the hassle. Considering my car is tagged, inspected, fully functional, and I obey traffic laws, all it served to do was give them an excuse to pull me over where otherwise they had none.
I have a spare grille that the car came with that has the holes already in it for the license plate bracket, I may get it painted to use when I take the car on longer trips.
also may just buy a retractable frame such as this one.
