Project Zero-Sum
Project Zero-Sum
First off I would like to say hello and that I have been reading for a while and learned a lot from this forum. My name is Andrew and I am located in Windsor right beside Detroit. I always liked the look of the third gen Camaro and my dad had one when I was born so there is some sentimental value as well.
Now to the build. I have been thinking about a track day car for a while and throwing around ideas with some friends I came up with an interesting concept. I am starting a track day car project/social experiment where I am trying to put together a third gen Camaro track day car for zero dollars. The idea is that the parts, equipment and tools will be bought, sold and donated by/to me with a final total cost of zero dollars including the car. I will buy what I need and sell what I don’t and hopefully come out in the end at zero. I will have a website and everybody that makes a donation will be acknowledged.
The idea just came to me last week but already over the weekend I picked up a quadrajet for $20 and a 95% complete 2 bolt 305 with a performer intake, aftermarket cam and most of the accessories for free.

Re: Project Zero-Sum
At this point my main goal is a running third gen that can last for a few sessions at a track day. I would eventually like to get to 300+WHP, a vortec 350, have a 4th gen rear end and a few of the lightweight 4th gen parts like seats and drive shaft, and some upgraded suspension and brake components.
I am going to try and acquire as many parts as I can for free or almost free(hopefully many from here) and then start bartering, trading, selling what I can as I put together the final mix. I am still in search of a car and currently scouring the surrounding area for whatever parts I can get for a 305/350/third gen.
My first question to the group is if I should pick up a complete 98 350 vortec engine with accessories for a few hundred that had 94k before being removed from a running truck or should I concentrate on looking for a car. I’m thinking I can use the performer intake I got with the 305 and maybe some of the other parts for spares and sell/trade the block, heads and rotating assembly from the 305 for other parts.

Website is up! http://kolbaso.wix.com/projectzerosum
Still searching(and getting shot down) for parts and a car. I have a lead on some suspension and brake parts in Detroit that I need to go over and check out. If anybody knows of a good place to find parts or if anybody has anything to offer please let me know.

Re: Project Zero-Sum
Big update this week. I was able to pick up a 94k mile 98 vortec 350. I traded an intake and alternator(which I found out I needed after) for an $80 credit plus sold a set of clear turn signals for $40 so the engine only cost me $60.
I have a hood near my brothers house if I can get up there so hopefully soon. Still need a chassis but its progress.

Re: Project Zero-Sum
Project ZeroSum has made some progress in the last few weeks. I picked up a free distributor that I may rebuild or sell to start things off.
Then I was able to pick up a manual 85 V6 car for only $250! I will use the car to generate funds by parting it out but also keep the suspension, rear end etc parts that will be good to have as spares or to complete my project. The body and most of the panels are shot but the mechanicals seem to be in good shape and the rims are pretty good. I could rebuild the T5 for a V8 but I will probably sell it at this point and look for a proper T5 later on.
This week I was offered a chassis minus engine and rear end for $100!! I will probably pick this up this weekend. The car was in an accident so the front end is cosmetically a bit rough but the fascia and hood are easily replicable from my donor car. The best part is the body and floors are in great shape. The previous owner painted the bottom and engine compartment so the car is clean and already stripped of most of the interior parts that I don’t need. With the running gear from my donor car and the funds/parts I can get for the things I don’t need from either car I should be well on my way to a working car. Here are pics of the parts car(Red) and the clean chassis(Blue).
