1986 firebird

i bought a 1986 firebird off of the classified section on this website. its a running driving 2.8 v6 with a 5 speed that basically only needs paint and a few little electrical issues dealt with. i am considering dropping in a 350. swap to auto or chance it with a world class t5.. that's a question for another day. anyways i paid 550 for it and the sellers were nice enough to trailer the car to MA from CT for me. im prepared to do a LOT of sanding. there is a fair amount of surface rust on this car, mainly the right rear. i think when its all finished, i'll have it painted black.

Re: 1986 firebird

The previous owner had a black parts car. The front bumper was swapped over to get the fog lights, one black fender was better than one of the white ones so that was swapped over. the black hood was put on so most of the front would be all black. I have the original white hood which is in better shape so I'm going to put that back on. The parts car also had black interior, which was swapped over to my car. So I have black interior except for the passenger area carpet too. The interior is the nicest part of the car right now. I'm loving working on it so far

Hahaha I'm sure that'll work. I know I'll get cursed out but I'm probably just gonna get a Maaco jobby. Not looking for a show car or anything. Just tryin to have a fun ride that looks decent even if it's from a few feet away. Ive already posted before pics, I'll definitely post some once I get some real work done.

Re: 1986 firebird

You know, that'd be a really fun and probably rewarding experience. The thing is I'm weighing the cost of paint supplies (I have 0) versus a maaco job for $700~

An even bigger obstacle is that I don't have a garage. It may be a long shot to borrow one also. But what would I be looking for in terms of an air compressor? Is that something that I can rent for cheaper than buying? I'd LOVE to have a shot at painting the car, I guess I just never saw it as being a realistic thing to do. It's something I'd have to keep redoing until it was perfect. I also have some extra body panels to practice on. Uh oh... Haha

Re: 1986 firebird

always flirted with idea but never painted mine but kinda regret it when i see others on this forum who atleast atempt it and succeed. If u havent already, read around here and obviously start with practicing on those extra panels first. Just figured I throw some encouragement out there since ive seen Maaco jobs in the family. However, if its a DD, 700 bucks for a presentable paint job would do me happy too when it runs fine. Good luck
