My 1992 Firebird Prodject

Ever wounder what you were thinking??
I spotted this car a few years back just rotting away in someones back yard. After watching her waste away I decided to purchase her for a mear $300. My wife was not happy when she saw this in her driveway.

This is how the firebird looked after draging her out of her grave.
This was a job all by itself. It took me and a freind about 4 hours to get her home. Just using my dodge 4x4 and a ****** rope. First had to remove one tire to get replaced. Then half way home the brakes locked up and caught the left front brake on fire. After cooling down the brakes with 5 galllon bucket of water. I removed the brake calapier and finally got her to her new resting place.

There's 2 red T/A's sitting in a front yard near me. I've always wanted to stop and do the same. Good for you for doing so I hope it goes well

Re: My 1992 Firebird Prodject

Happy Thanksgivening.

Well I've had the car now for one year. My camera broke after finding these in a you pull it yard. There will be many more trips to the yard. I have already rebuilt the rear end, also New brakes, bushings, and shocks in the rear. While I had the rear end out I also dropped the gas tank and cleaned it. Then I intstalled a new fuil pump.

Then I started on the front end. It is still in work.. I just recieved the new front struts, strut mounts, inner and outer tie rods. pitman arm and then new brakes and brake hoses. Also have installed new MOOG bushing's on the control arms. New ball joint also..
All suspension parts are either monroe or MOOG compontents.

Also have new bearings and the brake calipers have been rebuilt..

Those t-tops looks like they're in excellent condition! Are there any scratches on them?

Re: My 1992 Firebird Prodject

No scratches. They are like brand new. They came off a 1984 z28. I'd been looking for about 6 months and was giving up hope.
You can see the reflection of my pen fishing poles in one of the pictures. They look great on the car. I can't wait to get the chassis rebuilt over the next month. So i can start preparing the body for paint..

Re: My 1992 Firebird Prodject

Hope you continue to fix up the old Bird, not too many 92's were built so it's good to see another one saved. I am curious as to your new t-tops and noticed you said you had them on the car. I always thought that the t-tops changed pin sizes in the late 80's and that 84's and 92's would not interchange. Anyway, good find if they do fit and good luck with your 92.

Re: My 1992 Firebird Prodject

ShowNgo92 you are correct the pins are different. I installed them on the car about 6 months ago. No leaks. But I think i still have to address the pin issue. If i'm not mistaken the pins from the 80's are smaller. so I think they will rattle once i start driving the car. One of these years. The old t-tops had a crack in them and were leaking water all over the passanager side. So my reason for installing was to stop the leak. Next will be to fix the fit issuse. Don't think it will be a very hard fix though. I hope to get back to working on her next weekend. This weekend is full of me and my new rental property. I need to get it fixed for the new tentant to move in on the first. But I need the extra money to finish this 1992 firebird. Then I can stat on my 1975 NOVA custom.

Re: My 1992 Firebird Prodject

Took a few days off from work, and finnaly got around to putting the front suspension back together. While I was working on the front end I decidied to look inside the car and found a small leak around the t-top. After closer inspecition it was the fit from the guide pins.

The guide pins go into a plastic guide that is bolted to a bracket. So I went to the you pull it yard. Luck was on my side and I found a 85 bird with the t-tops gone. For only 5 bucks I was able to get the brackets and the guides. Now the t-tops fit tight.

So on to the next issue. The window regulator spring was rattleing in the bottom of the door. So Now it is time to return to the yard and remove a window regulator. Make sure I bring my drill to drill out some rivets. So if everything goes good today I should have the leaks fixed, and the brakes and bearing back on car.

Well by weekend end I should have it atleast into a driving car.

Re: My 1992 Firebird Prodject

Well it didn't make it into a driving vehicle yet. I forgot to factor in That I will be babysitting my 4 year old grandson. Well My son. He has been adopted by me and my wife.

I did manage to piece togther the front end. And all the brakes on the passanger side of the car. I should have the drivers side done fairly quickly. I need to stop at auto store tommorow after work and get brake calapier guides. Funny how I loss those small parts after 6 months of being off the car

Re: My 1992 Firebird Prodject

Found This on my computer.

This is what all the parts looked like under the car. This is the passenger side rear axle. It has already been rebuilt and installed under the car.
The front end looked just as bad. Many hours sanding old parts.

Re: My 1992 Firebird Prodject

Ok had the weekend off with sick 4 year old

But I did get a few things accomplished on the Bird.
Driver side window now works. I had to install a junk yard find. A nice window regulator.

I bleed all the brakes. The drivers front has a clogged line. I had a new one
but my dumbass striped it. Just ordered a new one from Rock Auto.

Then I decided to replace my battery tray.

Using just hand tools and an old 2x4. The metal is just stainless steel kick plate you see on the bottom of doors. This is my first metal prodject. And my welding skills are lacking. I've only been welding for 20 minutes. But Picking it up as I go.

Here are a few pics.

What it looks like with my cardboard template in place..

The door plate metal and all the tools I used in this prodject.

This is what it looks like installed in the car.

I then ran out of welding wire(cord). So I need to reload during the week and finish the rest of the plate. I have the tray made already and will fine tune it once I get all my materials together.
So i just sprayed all the bare metal with primer. I need new grinding stones for my angle grinder and I can finish cleaning up all my welds after I install the other plate..

Re: My 1992 Firebird Prodject

I can't wait to see how the paint turns out!!!! My 92 'bird is in the paint shop right now and I'm crazy anxious to see the final result, I've been waiting years to get her there! I went all PPG and it came to about $100 less than that since I skipped the flex additive, that little bottle alone was like $100 and no point since I'm using a urethane paint anyway.

I'm WAY jealous of your front nose! The best I could find still had bad warps we are working on taking out :/

Re: My 1992 Firebird Prodject

Yes that front nose was a pain in the *** to find. And have to say it was cheap all three parts $60.00. Yes I am using bulldog addision promoter for flex parts. Buddy of mine uses it all the time and never had a problem with the paint cracking. He runs a body repair shop out of his grarge.
