1985 Trans Am barn find rebuild
Hello again!
I am definitely one of those guys that gets accused of having "too many irons in the fire" and it is justified. The problem is that when I am searching for parts, its always much cheaper to buy a whole car off of craigslist than it is to buy a few big, but much needed parts. So here's the story:
I already have an 88 Firebird project, an 88 IROC-Z project, and a 1989 base Firebird project that became a daily driver and then a gift to my mom so that she would have reliable transportation to work and around town. Well, a while back she needed tires and I was strapped for cash. I had to take my 86 Trans Am wheels with my BFG Sport Comp 2 tires and put them on her car while I saved up for a set of tires for her. I saved up the money and then before going on tirerack.com to buy a new set of tires, I came upon this car on craigslist.
An 85 Trans Am. Does not run. Straight body, ran great before it died, tires only have a few hundred miles on them. Very dirty and needs work. 500 dollars firm.
Needless to say, the car came home. It had the original Trans Am 15" aluminum spoke wheels (they look like the 16" GTA wheels) with like new Dunlop 235/60-15 white letter tires on it. I swapped them out to my mom's car and the problem was solved about tires. But now I have a new project.
So long story short, I got it running. Its a TPI 305, and now it has the throttle body off of my IROC, and I re-wired it with instructions from this forum to run the IROC's ECM. It has now become my daily driver and the other projects got back-burner status.
Its a T-Top car and it doesn't leak. The dash pad is nearly perfect. The interior is torn up and needs the carpet and seats re-done. The LH window motor is bad and so was the RH window switch. Now the RH side has a good switch so at least I can roll that one down.
The A/C needs a set of lines because they are physically broken where they bolt to the compressor.
The spoiler was broken so I got one from an unknown year Firebird from a friend's parts pile (Its the 82-85/91-92 base spoiler with no brake light) and swapped the mount studs from the old one onto it and mounted it up. So far so good.
The brakes are a little soft. Its got the Delco rear disk brakes and they don't work at all, along with the e-brake. Its got the 9-bolt posi rear, so that's good.
The original silver paint up top is ruined from the sun. The original big bird on the hood is even outlined in surface rust but its there! The lower gray trim on the ground effects is still good.
Pictures will come and then I will try to document what happens.
