Chicagoland Machine shops?
Greetings everyone,
Haven't posted on here for quite a while now.
I am looking for a nice, reputable machine shop in the chicagoland area that has decent prices.
I'm having a hard time narrowing down a shop among the many that are around. Information about these guys is definitely not forthcoming and I was hoping that I could get some recommendations from first had experiences. I don't even mind driving out a bit, as long as the shop does good work and the prices are good.
Any help is always appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Re: Chicagoland Machine shops?
Thanks for the info. I have heard of this shop before but I wasn't sure about the quality of work that they do...
btw, for the record, I realize that good work and cheap are not synonomous. I'm actually not looking for cheap. In fact, I don't mind spending some money but I do have a budget that I would like to stay under and I am more interested in finding an experienced shop that can help guide me through the more essential work that I need for this project and stay within that budget at the same time. I am much more interested in patient individuals that can cut through the bull and give me a clear understanding of what I need to proceed...
Again, any first hand experiences are welcome...
Thanks again,
Wariat

Re: Chicagoland Machine shops?
what exactly are you looking to get done? i.e. body/frame work or block bore or whatever? I can get you a quote from my shop depending on what you need done.

Re: Chicagoland Machine shops?
Engine machine work is what I'm seeking.
I haven't gotten the motor apart yet but I'm hoping to have it apart by next week. Here is the situation as so far:
Engine is a bone stock 305 with about 87,000 miles on it. The car had a pretty bad C-rod knock before I mothballed it. I definitely need block and heads cleaned and I would like to have them inspected (magnafluxed if possible). Now I'm not sure of the damage to the block, if any, but I would like to know what an align hone on the mains would run me. I would also like to have the crank inspected for straightness and any other damage and the possible cost to repair any possible damage there. Also, I would like to find out the limits of a possible overbore and the cost for that as well as honing (w/ plates).
The goal of the engine is to put out about 300-325 hp (flywheel), hopefully. I am going to order the summit racing rebuild kit for 305s w/ the forged pistons. I would also then need the cam bearrings removed and pressed.
I am going to put in a sturdier cam in (not sure which type yet) but in light of that I would like to get the heads ported. I have the 081 castings and I understand that with some work they can flow pretty well. I would like to know the cost of the head work so that I can decide on whether or not I should just hold off and buy a new set (and I would have to wait a while for that, if I have no other choice).
That is the situation thus far, at least until I can get into the engine and get a better look. My budget is pretty tight so knowing the cost would be good that way I can determine whether or not I'm living in a fantasy world
.
Any suggestions on what I should do or not do, as well as cost saving tips would be greatly appreciated,
Wariat
