Considering '91 RS, $3000
Hello, I am a hopeful thirdgen owner, even though I have yet to buy one. It is definitely the kind of car I am going to buy, but the problem is that they are incredibly rare around here. I live in Western Washington, about 200 miles from Canada. My only requirement in the car is that it has to have a 5-speed. My particular problem is that because they are so rare, I can't find any basis for comparison of the 91 to see how much it is worth. So, after months of searching, (the RS is still for sale), I turn to the members of this board for advice, which is something I am sure I am going to be doing a lot of in the future!
Here's what it's got:
It is a 305 V8 (L03), and a 5-speed transmission in a straight 1991 RS with slightly flaky blue paint. 116,000 miles. No t-tops. The headliner is sagging, and the interior trim is coming off a little bit. One thing I am concerned about is the clutch. It engages near the top of it's travel, which is indicative of a worn clutch to me. Is this clutch behavior normal? There is no slippage, it just engages high. This car also has the infamous tach problems, with the tach reading around twice the actual value. I was redlined at 40MPH in 4th gear
, which I know isn't right. Also, a minor problem, the highbeam switch is nonfunctional. (Always on highbeams) Doesn't really matter much to me.
Besides those problems, it is in fairly good condition. The engine still feels strong, and it drives good.
So, the owner wants $3000, and has gone down before that several times. I have two questions:
Is $3000 a fair price?
-and-
Should I offer him closer to $2400 for this car?

It bluebooks at just under $2000, which seems low to me.
