Need Help From NJ Peeps With Magnum TPI Project Car!

If you're following the GMHTP Third-Gen Formula project car (Magnum TPI), you know we need help getting air into the motor. We take the induction off on the dyno and run an open throttle body and get 30 more horsepower at the rear wheels. When we put the stock induction back on, it goes away.

I have considered many options including: a functional ram-air hood (it ruins the lines of the car in my opinion), an SLP Third-Gen Firehawk dual snorkel set-up (battery needs to be relocated and there's probably not enought room with the big radiator and SuperRam intake), and custom ductwork squeezed between the engine and radiator on the passenger side (same path as stock, only larger). The last one I'm not too fond of because of all the bends and tight clearance between the radiator and throttle body--we'd probably give up some power on that one.

The car has been converted to speed density via a Gen 7 DFI so a MAF is not needed.

I was looking at an IROC/Z28 dual snorkel inlet but I don't know if it will clear the hood and latch mechanism. (The front bulkhead in front of the radiator would have to be cut for the filters, no big deal).

Another solution I'm looking at is leaning the radiator back with a custom radiator support and using a C4 or C5 intake over the front of the radiator and under the front bulkhead. The straight shot of air would be the least restrictive (IROC or Corvette solution) so that's what I'm leaning towards.

Has anybody worked through a similar solution that can give me some advice and possibly some pics? (If we go with your solution, we will give you credit in the magazine with a photo of your airway solution from your car.)

the stock TPI camaro setup is nothing spectacular either, and i don't know how you'd get the hood to close over it.

Have you tried a simple conical filter on the front of the throttle body? Some people aren't for that approach since it's not sucking in cold air from outside of the car, but it would certainly be the least restrictive route, and it's not like open throttle body is sucking in any different air either, so there's most, if not all of your 30hp.

K&N Makes an oval conical type filter that bolts right onto a TPI throttle body.

the dual snorkel setup SHOULD clear the hood. but i don't know if you're gonna get enough air from that.....you're probably better off with the cone filter right on the TB and rig up some kind of ram air setup for racing.

If you are going to run that cone filter you better have the engine running cool since it will be drawing in hot air from the engine bay! That is the last thing you want is warm air. I have seen people fabricate ducts that run along one side of the engine up to the top of the plenum to an air box that draws in the air from a cowl hood. I doubt that anyone sells that and it requires a rectangular filter, it just sits on top of the engine, just another idea, nothing special! good luck

No, that is just the placement of the intake for the car's supercharger! It is similar but it acctually sits on top of the plenum! It isn't a cone, it is a rectangular filter mounted in a custom box, simmilar to those on ss camaros where the air box sits on top of the motor for their ram air hood!

He's going for that stock look that will shock almost any little punk in thier daddy's SS! I gotcha, yes, i am talking about the air boxes like the ones on the ss when they first brought it back, it just sits on top of the engine and takes the "ram air" from the cowl. later

why not build something like pictured below like myself of some other members have made, Being speed density it would flow even better then the one I made and have pictured below.

Man that is pretty nice! How did you make that thing? I have a MAF system, so i would just be able to put that sensor where yours is, right, just clamp it down! I was going to go with a "ram air" set up in my iroc by cutting out the air boxes and putting some flexable tube down to the front bumper. I think that it will still be restrictive since i have the fastburn crate motor and the miniram! 30 hp is a lot to lose by just the intake! This thread will help me out as well. Any info on that intake would help 86FyrBird. Thanks-Bryan
