NJ state inspection is COMPLETE CRAP!!!!!
Sorry guys i have to vent. I got my car inspected on saturday. I failed for high HC, loud exhaust, no 3rd brake light, no rear brakes
The HC's and rear brakes are the only valid things they can fail me on. The third brake light works prfectly, always has, never a problem. my exhaust is loud, other than a cat i have a bullet muffler.
My big gripe here is, a friend of mine took his van to get inspected today. He just put a new cat on, thats it. He failed the 1st time for a cracked side view mirror, so he spent 13.99 on a new one, and passed. He passed with a shot front end, cracked windshield, his exhaust consists of a glasspack, and his front tires are bald from needing an alignment. That is complete and utter
So i spend 150 bux on cap rotor and a muffler, I still have to adjust the brakes.
Do i have a right to be upset? sorry its lng, thanx fr hearing me out guys.

wow that sucks man one of the perks to making friends with the master techs at my job means i will pass no matter what teehee they do inspections there and knowing one of them will always pass me i can pretty much do anything i want for an exaust or engine work WOOOWHOOO
and to further note that im wondering how mustange with exausts pass if they even do pass since most of them eith even a muffler seem to be louder than anyother exaust they are loud even at idle speeds whats up with that
it is bull****... only in Nj can a Ford Tauras not pass emisions, and a 15 year old, camaro, with 15 year old exhaust, cat, and everything else pass.... and onlys a 4 door, 4 wheel abs brakes, dual air bag, recordles driver can have to pay insurance of 2.5k a year.... f this... im moving to Penn... i need to see what place i wana work at has an inspection station... hummm.... will see gents... plus now im in Mass.... this sucks... Mass sucks worse the Nj... if its posible.... thank *** im only up here for college

hey steve if u think ull always get away with the "passed " inspection, just wait till a cop pulls u over and finds out the sticker is hot, and then more then likly u will be fired and so would the master tech, there i think is a 10,000$ fine and lose of liscence to STS and the master tech. so just make sure u dont get caught.

do u need smog to pass Nj inspection? Fly89 says that he had no tubes on his headers... and he passed... do i need the tube goin to the cat?... or can i just dismantle the whole smog pump?

I'm not sure if its a habit or otherwise, but at the Emissions station I usually have my escort at they have never checked under the hood. Course' this could just be because it a 4 banger econo box with no hope of making any decent power. They never checked anything not related to the emissions.

nikh23: i'm sorry, but we cannot have any requests for bogus inspections stickers posted on the board. it is a potential liability for thirdgen.org, and being a moderator, one of my duties is to prevent that from happening.
try reading up on fake inspection stickers....... they make you pay some very hefty fines from what i'm told.

had the rear adjusters repaired on the brakes an then i threw some octane booster and dry gas in. passed on the brakes and the emmision readings are as follows: nox 732, w/1273 limit, HC 76, w/167 lmit, CO .06, w/ .94 limit. My friends 5000 mile Iroc passes with those numbers. And the car really needed a tune up anyway. NJ still sux.
NJ is the worst ! By 2005 pa or at least philly will have the same crap [read in the paper] . IT should have been in affect a few years ago, but they voted it down . My car has failed 2 times , now it is sitting til I put a new egr . it's a Big rip off, and my car is pretty much stock.dont have enuff room to tell u how many new parts are in my car!! They even wrote down[1-st time failed ]that my lic. plate light was out!!!!!!!!

i remember when i got my celebrity back in 1999. it came from pa, so i had to have it inspected before my parents could title it in ohio.
funny thing is, the dealer where i had it inspected, they looked at the lights, made sure they worked, and made sure the horn worked.
"Ok, you're good to go"

Yeah NJ sucks but what ya gonna do. There is no real way to prove to anyone that the other guy passed and you failed. Its your work against theirs. I was talking to one of the guys I know up here in NY and he said that the smog tests are so in accurate that thats why they haven't started the sniffer test yet. But he says its coming soon. Who knows. I know I hate to think that I am going to have to pay 80 bucks for some shop guy to test my car and put a sticker on it. But oh well whutcha gonna do?

alright guess its my turn to complain! well yesterday i had to take my firebird to inspection..went to the state facility...im all happy cause i thought i had fixed the prob, well i go to inspection........wait 45 MINITS in the freaking LINE and it STILL fails!! not only do they fail me for my NOx which should have passed since EGR was replaced and all tubing replaced..but they were measuring my cowl induction and went the whole 9 trying to find the littlest thing they could fail me for.noones car before me took that long to go through the line! they tried to fail me again for the shifter indicator but i threw a fit so they let that one go. i swear nothing gives those people more pleasure than to slap a nice fat rejection sticker on it. our cars are freaking OLD so why dont they cut us a break already!

Speaking as a Mass inspector, I use a rule of thumb when it comes to which cars I really go thru closer than others. Think about what you all have seen many drivers of our type cars do on the roads. Not to mention some other brand x drivers. These are the ones more likely to get checked by the authorities during a traffic stop. Being that the inspector is the one who pays the fine, I'm not about to put myself in that position for someone I don't know. Not to mention that the shop I work for is very strict with regards to questionable items.
Now that being said, those of you who think it's ok to get passed with bad brakes, loose front ends, broken windshields, etc; you're dead wrong that this is ok. Those are the exact cars safety inspections are aimed at. Shame on any inspector that passes one of these rolling road hazards.
As far as those NOx failures go. There is more to why those are high than just the EGR valve. High operating temps from a partially clogged/blocked off radiator, heavy carbon buildup on the tops of the pistons, lean fuel mixtures (this could also be due to carbon buildup on the backside of the intake valves), excessively long periods of idling, etc can all increase NOx output. This is the main ingrediant of smog during the summer months. Think about all the bad air alert days you've heard on the radio/tv, an awful lot of people (me included) are badly affected on those days.
Ok, I'll get off my soap box now. I just wanted to give you a view from the other side of the sticker deal.

It isnt the safety end that i get aggravated at. If the brakes dont work then they need to be fixed. The point im gettin at is... I have seen so many other cars, in much worse shape, blowing smoke, busted windshields, gaping holes in the exhaust ect, ect, get by without even an eyebrow raised. Like i said the car needed a tune up and the brakes were a lil bad. Ok, fine. But dont fail me if the car in front looks like it should have been put to pasture a while ago. There was no reason to fail me for a 3rd brake light out, cause it worked fine. Then ppl there act suprised when i cop an atitude. If one car has bad brakes and fails, then the other car with bad brakes should fail. And if it isnt on the list and the equipment isnt there to properly test then dont look for the problem. There is no sound law in effect in nj as far as i know, and no decibel meter to determine if an exhaust is loud at state inspection. That was frivilous (sp) and un-necessary. Simply put as in the title. NJ INSPECTION IS COMPLETE CRAP.

We have shops up here that do the same thing. Those guys are dead wrong doing crap like that. Not sure how your exhaust loudness laws are stated but I'll put ours on here for an example.
Ours says the exhaust can not be altered from original equipment in decibels emitted from the tail pipe. The way that is written, there are some direct replacement non-performance mufflers out there that don't meet these specs much less a Dynomax, Flomaster, etc system. This is where the inspector must use his or her judgement. You can bet the punk with the buzzing rice burner will likely draw more attn than the middle age guy with the killer sounding pick up. Not saying it's fair but when you way the potential for getting hit with a fine against just slapping the red R on the windshield, it's not hard to see why some of us are less tolerant than others.
Believe me when I say that I've been on the rejected side too. Thing is that I trid not to let those other road hazards pull me down, I just did what I needed and at least took satisfaction in the fact my car was way better than anything those guys would ever have.
