Car: hopefully a Camaro soon
researching...
Ok...so here's the deal. I am interested in this 1981 T-Top camaro that I just found. I'm not too familiar with this year and would like to know a little bit more about it. What are some problems with it and what are some good things about it?
The guy that I would be buying it from is the 2nd owner of the car. He bought it from the original owner who purchased the car brand new. The guy that has it now has had it for almost 9 years and barely drives it. Reason why he's selling it is because he has no use for it. It has 86k original miles on it. The original owner rebuilt the engine and there's only about 30k miles on that. No rust, never been wrecked, it's a V6. This guy who owns it now bought it in El Paso, TX. He had driven it from there to Connecticut and then once to Tennesee and back. That's the extent of the long drives that this car has. It's got power steering, power door locks, tilt wheel. The water pump, fuel pump, alternator, and battery have all been replaced just within the last 3 or 4 years. The guy said that it's very dependable. I'm going to take a closer look at it tomorrow and maybe even test drive.
If you know anything about this year as far as the problems that have occured or things that might need to be replaced soon (example: tranny)...please let me know. I'm trying to do my research now so that I know exactly I'm getting myself into.
Thanks...and all info is much appreciated.

I don't know to much to tell you but I know those cars commonly rust around the rear window area. If it's a repaint check for any bubbles or weird looks in the paint, especially in that area. Check for body work like body filler in the quarter panels as these are difficult to replace. Even though he said no accidents you have to see for yourself. A magent with a thin soft cloth between it and the car will let you know if you're suspicious of a certain area.
Look at the weatherstripping around the t-top area, especially by the ends. I would guess they leak as many of the thirdgens do and this car is that much older.
Look for the regular things like spots on the driveway or in the street, could be a sign of leaking oil or trans.
If all's good and the price is right go for it but still remember it's an old car. A few thousand into a good example though could make a nice ride.
