Supercharged Camaro
Hey, I just got my 3rd gen, and I am not too sure about a lot of the details concerning upgrading, or anything complex. I have an 86 Z28, and I was just looking at some upgrades I would like to get for it.
I was thinking about a supercharger.
This says from 88-92.

How hard would it be to fit that into an 86? or is it totally incompatible? If it is incompatible could you explain why?
THANKS!!

Re: Supercharged Camaro
your car is an 86 with a v belt setup. that supercharger kit is for a serpentine setup, which is 88-92. you'd have to convert your car to a serpentine setup before you could install it on the car.

Re: Supercharged Camaro
paxton made a v-belt blower setup years ago. I have one of them. You can't buy them new anymore, but they are still out there on the online classifieds, on ebay, etc. there are a ton of other options out there if you convert to serpentine though. And there's always custom installs or turbo kits.

Hey thanks for the info!!!
Is that a difficult conversion?
and around how much do you think it would cost to do that?

Re: Supercharged Camaro
To swap over to serpentine, unless you find a COMPLETE car in the junkyard to pillage it will cost you a lot of money to do, since you would need a new alternator, water pump, all the bracketry, etc, etc. if you search on this board, i'm sure there are a number of posts about that. And then you're out a ton more money to buy a blower kit, like the hawks link mentioned.
To just use the V-belt paxton like i have, assuming you find the kit, you'll probably pay used in the $1500 range give or take. If the blower assembly has been rebuilt recently maybe a bit more, or if you find a kit with a blower in need of a rebuild, you can get one a lot less, but it costs $700 or so to get it rebuilt. Since you would be buying a used kit, expect to spend some additional time and money chasing down stuff like miscellaneous bolts. I have the install manual somewhere around, I could probably scan it and pdf it for you if needed.
Paxton doesn't even support the older stuff anymore, but these guys do: http://www.paradisewheelsinc.com/ You might even want to try and contact them and see if they have any of the v-belt f-body kits available.
Regarding the install, the first time i did it, it took 2-3 guys a good chunk of a weekend, but a lot of the effort was wasted on chasing down missing bolts and such. I did an engine swap in the car later and ran it and broke it in without the blower installed, and when i did finally install it, it only took me maybe 3 hours that second time. It's a relatively simple install.

Re: Supercharged Camaro
cool man, thanks a lot. I think I am probably going to go with the serpentine conversion. So if I convert it, then this would be compatible?
http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/in...OD&ProdID=1328
If so, does that look like a decent setup? Or are there better ones that would work for the same price area?
I will look around the posts, but do you know of any site on the top of your head that would explain the conversion?

THANKS!
-Andrew

Re: Supercharged Camaro
most people sell full serpentine conversion kits with everything you need for 300-400 bucks. look in the classifieds and you'll probably see a kit or two for sale.
if you do convert, that supercharger setup from hawks will work. i'd look around at different places before just buying one from them. i'd also look in the classifieds here for a used setup. many people have that exact kit that are selling them used for half that price.

Re: Supercharged Camaro
Here is an example of the serpentine setup. My good friend is doing a frame-off restoration of a 1967 Camaro RS. This is a 402 with a Pro Charger supercharger. He is estimating 800HP. Will know next week when it goes onto the dyno. His car will be in the ProCharger tent at the Hot Rod Power Tour if you want to see it. He is trying to finish by the Racine stop but will more than likely pick it up in Evansville and go to Memphis, then finish with the tour in Little Rock.

Re: Supercharged Camaro
sweet,
thanks guys for all the help!
1 more question though..
so its just a generic "serpentine kit," or does it have to be one specifically made for a 3rd gen Camaro?
Ill be sure to post another when its in =P.

Re: Supercharged Camaro
if you are talking about the serpentine conversion, they are specific to our cars.
