Bought a beast that needs some love...
Hi, guys. I just bought my first muscle car and need some help!
Disclaimer: I am a total noobie when it comes to working on old cars. I am really excited to learn all I can about getting my new baby working.
In my driveway, I've got a 91 RS that a previous owner dropped an old 454 in. It sounds great already, but I know it needs some work and TLC.
I heard from a friend about bringing the car to Englishtown next month for some advice, parts, etc. I will definitely look into making a trip down there (from northern NJ). From talking to the few pseudo-mechanic friends I have, I know that the first things on my to-do list are to rebuild/replace the (very old) carb and the unfinished exhaust that definitely needs to be redone. Otherwise, I know I need to bring it to a friendly mechanic that can help me do a thorough street tune and check the engine.
Any recommendations on friendly mechanics that know old engines and carbs? Any idea on what else I should focus on? I'm really looking forward to bringing her back to life and value any opinions or recommendations you may have!
Thanks,
Matt

Great...people are already calling our 3rd gens "old cars". All kidding aside. That looks like a really nice platform / foundation of a project. The big block install is just icing on the cake if it was done or started right. Good luck with it! My
, lose that hood and go stocker RS, Z28 or a SS hood. BTW, what wheels are those?

Haha - no disrespect on the "old car" title! It just feels old for me because I am only 23!
I am really excited for this project. I kind of like the hood but I agree that the stock z28s/SS are hot. I figure at this point I have to focus on getting her running a bit more smoothly first.
What do you guys think? I am tempted to start looking into cosmetic stuff (interior, paintjob, etc.) but there is definitely some work to do under the hood. The car runs strong, but needs a carb and exhaust for sure. What to do first? I am having trouble prioritizing...
P.S. the rims are some old Momo's but I just started cleaning the z28 rims that came with it - hopefully putting them on tomorrow.

I remember seeing that car for sale. I think it was Craigslist or eBay... I dont remember. But I remember it being a 5 speed.
Looks good, except for the wheels. But you already have that under control.

Yes, it is a 5 speed and was listed on Ebay... picked it up in Carmel, NY Sunday. I am hoping to get those crappy looking Momos off today!
Do you guys have any recommendations for a good mechanic in northern NJ that knows carbs, old engines, etc? I really dont want to bring it to the wrong person and end up paying an arm and a leg for shoddy work! Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!
THANKS,
Matt

Ask the guy who parked next to you who works on their car.
So it looks lik a firebird. My buddies and I were trying to guess what is next to the firebird... Can it be a first gen Camaro?
If it is my SLP runners are on the way to my house courtsey my buddy... If not I have to get him some crap for an FJ40.....

Sam,
I am not talking about the firebird right next to the car. If you look over the firebird there is another car there. From the lines you could see looks like a 1st Gen.
or are you saying it is a first gen firebird?
