VIN tag rusted badly

We have a nice body Camaro, with title, but the VIN tag is almost completely rusted away. I mean, you know there are letters there, but they are so rusty, you can't read them.
Is there a place that you can get replacement tags? I wouldn't want to get pulled over with it being illegible like that.
Ideas?

Re: VIN tag rusted badly

I would contact your local DMV, but to my knowledge there isn't any way to get a new one. Unless you can get one from GM directly.

Re: VIN tag rusted badly

Is the one on the door still visible? If it is, then that's an acceptable alternative for inspections/etc.

PA form MV-41 has (among other things) a section for "Application for state replacement of a VIN Plate" Download the form, fill it out, take it (with the car) to your local police station and have an office look at the car's secondary VIN plate (on the door) and sign the paper. I THINK this gets you a new plate... but it might just be a new sticker for the door... not sure which. Worth checking out.

Re: VIN tag rusted badly

Ok, thanks. Seems like every third gen in the 82-84 range we have gotten lately has a rusted VIN tag.

Re: VIN tag rusted badly

My 85 Trans Am had surface rust on the VIN. Took a small wire brush and brushed it clean.. I don't understand how they get so bad.
