Who would win in a race between a 87'GTA 350 and A 89' Iroc 350? The only mods to the Iroc are Alston SFC's, TDS Wonderbar, Hotchkis STB, Spohn LCA's & Panhard Bar, MSD 6AL, MSD Blaster Coil, Bosch Platinum Plugs, MSD 8.5mm Wires, Fresh Cap and Rotor, gutted air boxes, Custom Cat back, 80 series Flowmaster, 18" Angle cut exhaust tips and the GTA is pretty much all stock.. But will have a flowmaster put on soon and new wires and plugs before race.
Who would win? =)
I am just asking because I just signed papers to buy a 87 GTA firebird and i want to run my friend Ryan (iroc350tpi here) and was wondering who might win =)
also I have a 91 Firebird with a knock in the motor, dont know what it is but ya, it was free with the GTA =) so i am not bitching

The 89 IROC hands down. Reasons: Less wieght, and more horsepower. Check the Tech page for more comparasions.
The IROC has about 10hp advantage + it sounds like it is in good tune with some ignition/suspension/tune-up parts.
That's enough to win over a slightly heavier GTA, but not by much if you can drive and not spin.

The IROC is modded and the GTA is not. Plus the stock intake of the GTA is a bit more restictive than the stock intake of the IROC and the 89s in general had a bit more HP stock than the 87s in general, along with the IROC most likely being lighter.
I'd say the IROC would take it.

Haha. That 350 has a LOT of potential, as your first mods I'd suggest a header's back exhaust system. If you can afford/want them, go with long tube headers (much bigger gains over shorties) and I'll get you past visual smog inspection when the time comes
A full header back system should be worth an honest 20 rwhp. That would put you out in front of that camaro. If you were to run.
Also, just so you know, Flowmaster is pretty much the worst flowing of the performance brands. You could go with another brand, have better sound, might be less expensive and have an extra 5 rwhp. At your power level it doesn't matter a whole lot, but just something to chew on.
Where is sanger anyway?

I never seen him on TGO after that meet, did he ever do the TB bypass or did he put it back to stock?
Who cares if he is .3 seconds faster.

i thought it was the other way around due to intake restrictions.
from https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/techdb.shtml
at the bottom of the engine spec charts it reads "Note: These are Camaro ratings. It is said to take around 5-10 HP and TQ from TPI Firebirds because of intake design."
plus the firebird was usually more "luxury' rather then muscle so it also weighed more.
please correct me if im wrong on either statement.

Yeah, the dude has it backwards.
The TPI 'birds have a supposed 5-10 disadvantage due to a more restrictive design of the airbox on the pass. side.
Of course we all know there are lots of exceptions to the rule when it comes to some cars being faster than others stock anyways.
Weight wise there is not really a difference unless you have a GTA and want to keep all your luxury options.
Formulas and early model 3rd gens are a tad lighter.

i was thinking of your gta when i typed the weight comment lol
Well the GTA is about 3500-3600 w/out me in it.
What do you Camaros weigh, like 3400-3500?
Not too much heavier, just a couple hundred lbs. max.

200 is alot, i know when my 200ish lbs friends sit in for a ride i can feel the difference in power lol
Yeah, 200 is good for like .2 in the 1/4.
I don't think the diff. is that big though.
One comparison I saw for '87's.
I think '89s were about 50lbs heavier for both.
IROC-Z 350 5.7 Automatic Overdrive 3341
GTA 350 5.7 Automatic Overdrive 3476
Yeah, even 1 buddy in the pass. seat and I can tell the diff.
