Hey guys, I start school at Davis later this month and well, I won't have much money for other things like the camaro when I do because all my money will be going towards school... so I was just seeing if you guys had any suggestions on what would be a few good options for my car and my hobby.
What I have so far:
1) Camaro as DD commuting 3 days a week. (Rocklin to Davis)
2) buy a beater, put cover over Camaro and buy a few goodies for it!
3) DD Camaro while modding the hell out of it!!
Number 3 is a joke... just seeing what you guys think and what you would do if you were me. My ls1 has 155k on the clock and still runs great I just don't know if it will continue to run real great much longer if I had to drive it that MUCH for school.
Any thoughts or ideas? And no I don't want to sell it for something better like a 3rd gen, I like my camaro!

get a beater daily driver and put the camaro away till you can take car of her. no point in putting all those miles on her.
Keep it as is, and drive it.
It's nice to have a 13 sec DD.
Don't waste your $ on another beater.
No reason to keep a high miler under wraps.
You're only going to Davis 3x a week anyways.
No need to mod further either, you've got 109mph traps you're not utilizing.

Technically, the question does not make sense.
You said you are starting school and all your money will be going towards it.
Then you list option #2 as: buy a beater & buy more goodies for your Camaro.
Seems to me this would require money to do both.
Not to mention insuring both cars.
Hopefully you have a decent job to support whichever way you go.

Have you sold the thirdgen? Use that instead?
well Del I was thinking if i had a beater that would save on gas so i could buy a few things for the camaro... but I like your suggestions. I meant to say alot of my money will be going to college, but I still have some just not as much as before.
IF i had a beater which i probably won't i wouldn't drive the camaro at all.
Steve, the thirdgen was sold.

hmmm i solved the problem by working full time (assistant manager, about to make store manager) and taking online classes to finish my degree.
Many factors would go into deducing which is the most cost effective route in the long run, if that's your goal.
I doubt the gas mileage on your Camaro is THAT bad.
What do you get to a tank, 200-250 miles?
Purchasing a beater, $500-$2000.
Insurance for beater, $50-$100 monthly.
Driving a 13 sec DD, priceless.

I had a 4 banger for a while and finally did the math an realized that I was wasting money having a car I didn't enjoy driving. All my vehicles are DD's (SEE vBGarage Daniel U) Gas milage isn't everything. DMV, insurance, cost of maintanance, etc. Drive what makes you happy. All mine are 5.7 V8's and the HD is an 88ci. V-TWIN. Just my 2 cents.Supreme Member
How far is davis from ur house? I say ask school if they have a shuttle to take u to school and back. I used to drive to san jose state for a year and i was sick and tired of the mornin commute and school parking. Many occasions i have been late for class because of parking. Most cases I had to park over a mile away. After i heard that my college offered free shuttle (included in ur student fees), i quickly started using it. SAVED me tons of money, and i've been on time in my classes. All i had to do is park at this local park n ride close to my house and the shuttle took me straight to school. The shuttle comes every 7 minutes. The shuttle also gives u an option of taking a little nap before class.
its about a 45 min drive to Davis from my house. Del the gas mileage is not that great because I am running extremely rich right now untuned. I need to get it tuned really bad!!
I barely get 17-20 mpg in the Supra.
Not exactly a gas saver, but it's still a nice, different ride than the 3rd gen.
My reasons for the DD are to keep the GTA miles down though of course.
Makes the times I do get to drive it all the more gratifying.
Spend the $500+ to get that fast piece tuned at FFP or wherever tunes those dime a dozen pieces.
Good for you in continuing school btw.
This AA I've got is just decoration, hopefully that BA gets you somewhere.

or spend 400 for a dyno tune at newtech performance. Thats where im takin my car for my dyno tune. But for your school. IF ur school offer the free shuttle, i jump all over that. save ur gas for the drags.Originally Posted by OUTATIME GTA

Use the 4th gen for daily driving. Thats what I do. It's cheap! It's a high milage 4th gen. Not much value. Why wrap it up unless you plan to make it drag only?
I don't daily drive my awesome thirdgen for obvious reasons. It takes the fun away from the car if you drive it every friggen day. Can anyone agree with me?

As other said keep the 4th gen as your dd. Not worth the money and time it takes to buy and up keep even a junker as a dd.
it already has alot of miles on it and its not really valuable just drive it every day gasmileage on the highway cant be that bad
and if your gas mileage is really bad have the oxygen sensors on both sides scoped or just replace them probably never been replaced its about time.
only the ones before the cat though.

Or at least replace the O2s before getting tuned.

He has no rear o2's its an off road y-pipe. He needs to get o2 sims or get it tuned out. Either way, if the car hasn't gotten a dyno tune after the header install, he should get it done. If the previous owner did the dyno tune, then all he need is rear o2 simsOriginally Posted by OUTATIME GTA
