Ignition Opinions

Hey guys,

Well, since the car is still in pieces (intake) I'm considering doing some work to the ignition system. I had a new cap & rotor put in a few thousand miles back, but from what I've read is that we have no power above 4000+ rpm. I'm going to be throwing on some AS&M LTR & TPIS Base in the near future to free up some upper range RPMs.

[If you're interested, there's a Group Purchase thread for each going on right now on the Group Purchase Forum ]

What have you guys done? What would you recommend? I was reading up on a MSD 6AL system... how hard of an install is that?

Oh and if any1 is free this weekend, wanna help get my EGR & intake put back together? C'mon, ya know you wanna! Free beer

the hardest part about installing an ignition box is finding a place to mount it. If you buy the harness it make the wiring a lot easier. Had a 6A on my Iroc wans nothing to the install. you may wanna think about getting a high performance ignition control module if you get an MSD.

I'm getting the 6al for my t/a and my 4runner. I've heard good things about them and that they are a breeze to install.

I know that when I just put an Accel coil on the 350 I built for my dads 63 bel air it smoothed out the idle and woke it up a little off the line. I wouldn't say it was faster, but just having a high powered coil made it feel smoother and like it wasn't holding back. He has since installed a whole MSD setup, (dist. and coil with 6al box & cap, taylor wires) and says the car runs way better.

I tossed his old Accel on my sixer when my coil burned up, just hoping I wouldn't have to buy a coil for the damn thing. It idles smoother AND I picked up like 3 mpg on the freeway.

Performance or not... I say ignition upgrades rock, do it.

Ya I'm going to upgrade my ignition for sure.

Now I just have to figure out the exact parts I need.

MSD-8500 I think is the box & Coil. I need plugs.

What about MSD distributor / cap / & rotor? Are those needed too? Anything else I forget?

I'd get a good cap and rotor, doesn't even have to be MSD if you don't want. As long as it's the good kind with all brass contacts, not the cheapo autozone replacement, you'll be good.

For plugs, the only thing I ever use besides stock AC Delco's are NGK's. I'd stick with one or the other and kick the gap out .05 or .10 when you get the coil and box on there.

Get some good 8mm wires too

I'd say a distributor itself is unecessary, I'd probably wait until more is done to the car to warrant that. From what I see, most people don't start worrying about the distributor itself unless the stock one is getting worn or they're doing alot of high RPM driving.
