Del you were talking about welding. Here are some pics of my exhaust and my custom Spintech muffler.
What kind of x member and torque arm set up is that? Originally Posted by Comp788

T-5? Just trying to figure out how you routed true duals OVER the x member...also since what size are they? 3"?
----------
now that I look at it again it looks like you cut the frame rails...
Well that whole set up is something that I built from scratch. If you goto the Fabrication section and look under the thread 1982 Silver State Project you can see what I did and the steps that it took to get it done.
The x member is 1" x 2" x 1/8" wall tubing and the new frame rail extensions are made from 11gs P&O or to the average person just under an 1/8" thick steel. The torque arm is not in the pictures but I purchased a Spohn TA and made my own mounts.
The transmission is a T56 retrofit transmission. By doing what I did i have a ton of ground clearance for my exhaust and it is tucked up really tight.
The Headers are a 3" collector and the two pipes are 3" into a single 4" that goes up and over the rear axle. It clears great and does not rub or rattle on anything. I was also able to keep all of the factory heat sheilds too!
There are a bunch of pics in my thread in the fabrication section. Other stuff that I did was custom SFC that tie into the new sections of frame and the original frame too. I have already put pictures up there so the board won't let me post them here. If you want to see anything you can send me a PM and I can email them to you.
The exhaust was a major time suck but well worth it. I feel pretty good I ahve one of the best amounts of ground clearance on any third gen out there with this size exhaust.

Dig it:
Dr. Pepper Can Test
This car is way too low. Brett's Z has room to spare under it compared to this car.

Looks too time consuming for my taste...then ontop of that even if I were to do something like that I still can't see over teh x member with an auto tranny. Now i remmeber why i hate these carsOriginally Posted by Comp788

Well, the parts are incoming. I-pipe, cat, and axle pipe will arrive a day before the Edelbock headers.
"Throaty" is what I'm shooting for. I think this means my right, rear tire might have to be replaced more frequently.

What cat did you buy? I tshould sound awesome after the work. What tips have you decided on? Here is a soundclip of the magnaflow setup on an lb9. I think it sounds awsome.

I got the Dynomax cat and will be sticking with the current Flowmaster 80 and tips I have now. I can reevaluate later if I need to.
Must be nice to be so close to the Summit distribution center.

Yeah, that was the cat the Harjeet put on the t/a and it was a nice piece. The flow does sound good with bigger pipe so you should be happy.
Actually, I'm on my way back to Summit to get my Stealthram
. I just took off the tpi and it's filthy, still had raw gas inside the plenum, and I noticed that the dr side runners are dented so I figured, what the hell, it's off, may as well do it now.

RMA...
All the parts are here otherwise but I am in Vancouver.

What are V-band clamps and where can I get them?Originally Posted by Comp788
When I built my exhaust I used v-band clamps. Quite a bit more money then bolt together flanges but no gaskets to leak and they last forever. They also are much thicker then bolt together flanges and never leak. The v-band clamps are available from quite a few places but I get mine from Specialty Product Design in Rancho Cordove CA.
Send me a PM if you can't find them I have their number at work.

I have a good friend who owns an exhaust shop. One of his customers came in with a 4th gen with a Flowmaster 80 who had just had the car on a Dyno. He changed out the Flowmaster 80 to a Magnaflow and picked up 26 HP.
Actually, that’s not all that uncommon… that’s roughly about the same number as the few times I’ve seen that swap on a dyno on a 4th gen. I used to have a dyno graph showing a 28hp drop between one of the Decoma cat backs (long time ago, really cheap, stainless cat back for 4th gens) and the flowmaster crossflow setup. What’s worse, is that the flowmaster setup actually looses hp vs a stock 4th gen setup.Originally Posted by Comp788
I need to look at the links and see what is going to be the best choice. If you go from a Flowmaster 80 to a Magnaflow you will get approx about 25 HP. I have a good friend who owns an exhaust shop. I completed up my exhaust last night but have to drop the rear end out of the car to finish weld it. It came out sweet!!
4" Stainless with a custon stainless Spintech muffler.

I know that you’ve decided, but someone else might be looking at this…Originally Posted by Comp788
So I did some checking and it looks like a nice set up would be the Dynomax I pipe and Dynomax over axle pipe. They are both 3" and should fit nice. This will allow you to use any muffler. I think Terrell said he had an old Spintech muffler. That might sound really cool. You will still need tail pipes but that should be looked at when you chose a muffler. Make sure that the I pipe that you choose matches the muffler/tailpipe layout that you want, unless you want to end up cutting and welding anyway. For example, the SLP I pipe enters the middle of the muffler, where most enter offset to the back of the car so you’d have to extend the SLP pipe to use it with most f-body mufflers. I believe that there are one or 2 that offset it to the rear, same problem.
Secondly, the 3rd gen, LT1 fourth gen and LS1 fourth gen use different hangers, the there are 2 LT1 cat setups, and tons of 3rd gen cat setups. You can interchange as long as you’re willing to swap brackets around and adapt the front of the I-pipe to whatever exists under your car (by far the easiest is are the dual cat setups, which all have a decent y that gets you over by the axle, and you can take any of the other I pipe setups, cut them off and attach them there. If you have a single cat setup, you can pretty much get yourself to the same point by cutting it off after it makes the bend to get it next to the axle and adapt over from there.

I built the tail pipes out of 3" S/S tubing. I ordered 3" tubing with a 90 degree mandrel bend then I cut them to length on both ends. I do not have it running yet. Headers just got shipped out to HPC and the header gaskets showed up yesterday. I also figured out that I had a 1330 u-joint on my third member and my driveshaft is set up for a 1350 so I had to order a 4130 1350 yoke from Strange. There are also a few other things to tidy up.
The custom LCA are now done as well as the PA bar and PA support bar. I made all of those items out of 1 1\4" .095 4130 tubing. I have a couple of other things to fab up and then send them all out to be powder coated black. I made my rear axle brake hose mounts and the brake lines for the rear axle as well. These things take time and I want it done right the first time.
I'll put up a sound clip when I am done. Still going to be a while.
