Well i just got a 84 camaro with a 305 thats burning oil im pretty sure that its the piston rings so i bought a whole new motor for 100 bucks which was a deal i couldnt pass up even if i were to use the motor for a go kart or somthing. I know that the motor is a l69 which from my understanding its a decent motor. But i was wonder what i could do to the motor to get the most power out of it but keeping smog in mind. The more specific you could get on details the better because im new to building motors but in no way am i new to fixing cars i was just always more into body work and paint. Any information would be great thanks. Also i dont want to hear get a 350 because i already bought the other 5.0 and i dont believe its smog legal here in cali.

the best advice I can give you is to ask this question on the Carburetor section of this site. They will now the best modifications for your engine to get it to run better, stronger, and stay within smog specs.

Re: 305 upgrades but smog consious
First off putting a 350 in is legal here in California (I have an advanced smog license). Second are you going to run a carb or fuel injection? I would suggest going with fuel injection if you can afford it for better gas mileage and reliability. The computer controlled carbs that came in the Camaro's are trash and there are no California approved aftermarket carbs. I would also suggest going with a TPI setup, You should be able to get a complete TPI setup for under 500 dollars. The stock TPI system works great for the 305's and will give you extra low end torque.

Have any info. on how he gets the TPI smog approved. Does he go to a referee in his area and ask them for the proper info. etc..

I used to work for the smog referee. To get the TPI approved he would have to go to the referee and it would all have to match the under hood diagram for the same year TPI setup and pass a regular smog test. Its actually pretty easy to do, just try and get all of the necessary parts like the wiring harness and computer off of the same car. also don't be afraid to ask for help and take your time and do it right the first time and always buy quality parts that you can trust, its better to spend the extra money on a qaulity part because it will last longer and save you money in the long run.

haha pretty much.

I always thought you couldnt upgrade to a 350 unless you transfer all the components that the 350 is from. So therefore since no third gen 350's with carburetors are out there you cannot. But thier are third gen 350 TPIs so if you transferred all the smog stuff with it. Say you pull it out of a 91 z28. then you'd have to have it smogged as if it were a 91 z28?

In essence, make it look like its supposed to be there ( if it doesn't have CARB #s) and you should do fine. If it looks factory, then visually, you shouldn't have any issues. Take lots of pics of cars that have all the factory smog and vacuum lines etc. Your duplication act will go much smoother.

You are correct about all of that, pretty much as long as the motor is of the same year or newer than the car and it has all of the smog equipment off of the car it came out of and you take it to the smog referee and it passes the smog test it is legal. but there are a few exceptions like you cant put a truck motor in a car unless that same motor was offered in a car, you cant go from a small block to a big block and if your car originally had fuel injection the new motor must also have fuel injection.
