Re: So Nor-Cal. ..Does your 3rd gen have a name?
When I bought my 1992 3.1 I had to drive it from the mountains in puerto Rico to the metropolitan area where I live. The owner didn't tell me that the waterpump seal was gone. The car overheated and I drove it with the needle as far past red as I have ever seen it to on any car to about 20 miles of mountain roads till I could find a gas station. Filled it with water that just poured back out. It overheated about 5 times on that ride home.
Everytime i stopped it looked like a smoke grenade went off under my hood.
But she started right back up every time. Through the flames she rose again. Soon to be reborn once more as a 3.4 turbo. An so her name was Pheonix.

I'm from Oakland. Went to highschool in Castro valley ( for those wondering why I'm posting in this section. I spend half the year in the bay and the other half in puerto Rico. There are almost no regulations on vehicles in PR and insurance is covered by the government up to $5000. I love it. Comes wih registration( less than 300 a year).

Good story and I'm sure that 3.4 turbo will be sweet.

Hate to break it to ya though, but it's spelled "Phoenix".

Re: So Nor-Cal. ..Does your 3rd gen have a name?
PUERTO RICO? I'm surprised your poor car didn't break off parts of the suspension on the way home and leave them laying off beside the road(s)!

Here in Sonoma County our roads are rated nationally as some of the worst. But when I took my first trip to your most excellent island I was totally surprised at how large and plentiful the potholes were; especially for a tropical climate. In some places that have a lot of deep frost heaves or earth/soil, like in North Cali that's predominately Adobe-Clay in the valleys, bad roads happen a lot, but I was always curious what the story was over in Rico. Any idea?

It must have been hell on the guys with the lowered suspensions. There's supposed to be a top notch drag strip there I've heard.... Nitro-Nicky

Re: So Nor-Cal. ..Does your 3rd gen have a name?
The roads in the Caribbean islands are all messed up.
It has to do with a few things. I think the level of humidity and the unbelievable amount of rain that we get that makes it hard to keep up with the public works. And alot of the areas are poor and they would rather patch small holes a few times a year than fix the road completely.

The largest problem and reason is a lack of quality control. Governments in the Caribbean are small so the underhanded dealings that happen are way more visible and accepted. The government chooses a company to do the roads and that company has a monopoly. Then they cut corners to save money. It also ensures that they will have more work, when the crappy roads they made go bad guess who is paid to fix it.
The roads are built in layers. I don't know the parts but you can see them on the potholes and broken roads. But they don't put down enough of each layer and when large trucks go over them they break. Once broken the carribean weather does the rest.

Damn.. that's all bad. I'd hate to have to drive out there. I bitch enuf about some.of the potholes and imperfections here and its not really all that bad. My suspension in my maxima is pretty stiff and I'm constantly dodging crap in the roads. PR would be a nightmare

Re: So Nor-Cal. ..Does your 3rd gen have a name?
Thanks for throwing out an answer. I've always been fond of occasional speed runs to get the stress out of my life. (last spring I hit my all time high run of 153mph in Nevada) Big pot holes can ruin a speed run real quick.
A few years ago we had a motorcyclist hit a hole on hwy 101 at normal traffic speeds and it busted his front wheel. He was promptly run over by an 18 wheeler. Ever since, the county has started making sure the largest potholes are filled. However, we have a great deal of people with factory aluminum wheels that crack and flood the tire shops with mystery repeating flats that can't be found by normal punture leak tests.

But this is Waaaaaaaaaay off subject. I was just curious. Big Thanx for answering! Nitro
