JOYNER 650CC DUNE BUGGY TIMING

I need help with my Joyner 650cc dune buggy. I bought it in poor condition wouldn't turn over. I took it apart and found the pistons rusted to the cylinders from sitting to long. Anyways I got everything cleaned up and put back together but it trys to start but it backfires. I bought a new carb and installed it. I put the #1 cylinder TDC on the comp. Stroke and set in distributor . I'm sure it's got to be off but I don't have a timing light to check it. DOES someone have a trick to getting this at least close so its running so I can use a light to tune it in?

This website is for 1982 to 1992 Chevrolet Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds.

We don't do dune buggies here.
