Need some tips

Well I'm going to attempt to replace my flexplate this weekend and I just wanted to see if anybody has any tips or suggestions. I've never done one before, and I've never just pulled the trans out of a car. I have a haynes repair manual that give step by step instructions on how to pull the trans so I plan on going off that. Just figured I would ask to see if anybody knows any tricks to make it go a little smoother and faster. Thanks

take off the driveshaft, put a pan under the tailshaft, some fluid will leak out. pull the converter cover, pull off the 3 bolts holding the converter to the flexplate, you have to spin the motor over to get all 3. next remove the torque arm from the trans. then put a jack under the pan with a 2x6 block of wood to steady the trans, remove the trans mount bolt and drop the trans crossmember, lower the trans slightly.....pull the distributor cap beforehand since the motor will tilt back enough to break it. Next remove the speedo cable, trans cooler lines and TCC lockup plug. Remove the 6 bellhousing bolts and the trans will need to be pulled back 1" to get it off the dowel alignment fittings on the back of the block and then drop the trans. Takes me an hour to 2 hours to do this usually on my back and I HATE working on my back.

Yeah, basically what steve said. Be sure not to drop it on a helpers arm, lol.

It is a real simple task, just very scary the first time.

Some swivels will come in handy for the top 2 bolts. You could try getting them from the top first, depending on how easy you access to them is. If you are going in from the top for those, a speed wrench is your bestest friend.

Good luck.

wish i could but i'm busy on my camaro with this 9" crap i'm dealing with, then I have a cam swap before I volunteer on anything else. Might have a paying gig off camaroz28.com and one of the members there as well. Should be an easy $500 or so.
