Thirdgen Fest '05 information
Well, I guess it's time to start making plans for Thirdgen Fest '05. This will be our fourth year and it keeps getting bigger every year. We think we've got some great new ideas that will make Thirdgen Fest '05 the best one yet!!!
First, we'll start with what's basically the same. The party will again be on Memorial Day weekend (May 28th). The party will start at 11:00 am and end that night with a car cruise. The party is in Crete, IL which is about 40 minutes south of Chicago. We will have plenty of food and drinks. (No alcohol will be provided. However, if you want to bring your own that's fine.) We will again try to get the nicest cars up front and the other cars will be along the side. We are also going to raffle off another car this year. This year's car is a 1982 Z28 Indy Pace Car. It is a very nice car and pictures will be posted of it soon. Tickets for the car will be $35 each and you can buy as many as you like. (You don't have to be present to win.)
Now, here's what's new for 2005. I guess we should start with the bad news. We decided to add a registration fee this year. The fee will be $35 per car. (It doesn't matter how many people are in the car.) That fee includes a raffle ticket so basically all it means is that each car must buy a raffle ticket to get into the party. Along with the ticket you will get a registration package. This will include a car information sheet to display with your car. It will contain information like your name, Thirdgen user name, where you live, car info, etc.
Note: Registration and ticket sales will start on March 1st. Registration packages will be $35 from March 1st through May 15th. After May 15th the registration cost will be $45. (We're doing that to encourage early registration and hoping that will decrease the number of no-shows we've had in past years.) The price of the raffle tickets for the car will not change and will continue to be $35 each through the day of the party.
The biggest change for 2005 is the addition of a car show. Every car attending the party will be issued a ballot to vote for the best cars. Only people bringing cars are allowed to vote. Right now, we have nine classes planned. They are:
Best Camaro: stock
Best Camaro: modified
Best Firebird: stock
Best Firebird: modified
Best Paint
Best Engine compartment
Best Interior
Best Restoration
Best of Show
Trophies will be given out to first place in each category.
Also new for this year is the Friday night pre-party. This will be at 7:00 the night before. We will have a bonfire, keg, pop, chips, etc. This really isn't about the cars. It's just gives everybody a chance to hang around and have fun.
We've got some other ideas we're thinking about for this year but haven't decided which ones we're going to use. I'll probably post some other ideas later and find out which ones people like the best.
This post was intended to give people an idea of what to expect this year. Most of the information is really basic. More detailed information will be provided later. Keep an eye on the Thridgen Fest '05 board for all the latest information.
Information is also available on our website www.thirdgenranch.com

Also, there's two campgrounds just down the street. I know people stayed there last year and I would think they'll be people there this year as well.

--Your going to lose a lot of people that have been there in the past and you will lose new people that have yet to attend like myself........Not only because of the cost but also with the "good" cars in front rule......That is the most senseless, mindless way to organize the cars.........Someone elso metioned a camaro side and a bird side...that would be the better way.........What you need to do LFN is take a vote at how it should be set up this year. A lot less people would be pissed off if you did it this way. EVERYONE as a whole can vote on what price is fair and alos how you should set up the cars....maybe then i would show up.....along with bill

Yes .I agree. The idea of the nice cars up front is not right.I am the owner of a car club. And we have all sorts of camaros and firebirds in differant stages of constuction. So what you are saying is the peaple that has the funds to do their car to show car quality is better than the rest. But lets put th 8 second bbc tubbed out 3 stages of NOS 91 firebird (what i have) in back. Because it is not show quality.I think it should be first come first serve. That way everyone gets a chance. We all put alot of time and money into our cars. Also the fee is to much.I was planning on bringing the club down. But that is a little much.We can go to other shows closer for less.I am new to this sight. So we wanted to come and meet others. But we will have to see.

I agree that the price might be a bit too steep, but I think they were trying to keep it simple. Basically its an entry fee/raffle entry. Plus a packet and some party fun!
I'm sure these types of events aren't cheap and take a lot of time to put together. Maybe it should be 15 or 20 bucks?
Also, I am against the good car/bad car separation thing. Then you will have everyone crowded in one area looking a few cars that are shinny and not much else. Might be a congestion problem on top of making those with "unfinished" or "non" show quality cars feel like they just got ripped off.
All in all, I was considering still trying to make it up from Oklahoma. It sounds like a good time with a bunch of cool people! Seems a little tweeking is all that is needed to keep everyone happy.. just my $.02

I don't see what the big deal is about the separate parking. Everybody on Thirdgen complains about all the ratted out cars running around that give our cars a bad name. That's all we're trying to avoid here. This party relies heavily on pictures from previous events to draw interest. Having some beater thirdgens parked front and center aren't going to help our cars or the party look any better. No car show/event is going to promote it by showing project cars.
I think everybody attending the party realizes that there are a lot of project cars out there, that's why we have the "Best Restoration" class in the show. Face it, putting a $250 project car next to a perfect, big money car isn't doing either car any favors. In fact, it's going to make the project car look REALLY bad!!! A lot of people at past events have mentioned how embarrased they were to have their project cars parked along side some of the other REALLY nice cars and this lets them avoid that.
Also, it's not like the main section is some "area of shame" tucked out back. It's just the other side of the driveway in front of and along side the house. It's only ten feet away from the other section. The front section holds about 50 cars and the side section holds about 150.

but the point is, a $50,000 Tricked out iroc, should be able to sit next to a "$250 project car" with out any trouble...i mean, i have an average Trans am, not fancy, and not crappy...and i would be mad if i was told, "oh no, you cant park here" it for the nice cars"..
everyone here like there cars, and to mee, its rediculous having them park seperate...
thats one of the reasons why i am not going.

i guess my car would be considered nice since its in a calender, but i didnt think it was deserving of it. i would give up a front row space for winger's hawk, as well as other cars that are nice looking. i spend alot of hours and alot of money tinkering on my scrap for me, i really dont give a **** what other people think. so ill be there, and i want to see some nice cars, wherever theyre parked!

Your the participant, not your car....Parking by rank order..thats busch league for a car show.
If you want to have nice cars up front then suggest you follow the TA Nationals lead. They have a special section for last years 1st place winners called the "Winners Circle". Those cars park in a special place and do not participate in the show.
Other than that, Park where ever you want and during the show ....park by class like most car shows.
As far as cost...it does cost to put on a show. Consider it entertainment costs. If you can't pay....don't go. No ones getting rich putting on these shows. Losts of hard work, phone calls, coordination goes into it.
Putting on a show is like hearding a bunch of cats
Do the show, pay your $$, have fun...end the end its about the people and not the cars.

$35 seems like an expensive price since a lot of people will be driving pretty far for this. I'm not against having to put up a little cash. Personally, I wouldn't buy a raffle ticket. don't need or want another car. but I would be willing to pay $10-20 for the meal/hospitallity and to help cover the cost of organizing etc.
I almost came last year but my local club had our own event going on that weekend. I think what drew me towards driving that far for it was because it was going to be more focused on meeting other third gen owners and seeing their cars. Hanging out with a bunch of people with a common interest.
Personally, having an organized car show and a raffle adds no value to this event for me. It just seems like it would draw away from what interested me to it in the first place.
Hope this helps.

I think 35.00 may be a little steep, but considering the preparation and costs involved in having an event like this it is reasonable for what is being offered, hes GIVING away a car to keep things more interesting. Now why some of us may not want or need the car that is a pretty big perk, and im sure he wont end up ahead when all is said and done.

305 4bbl
not much to look at
I'll probably be in the back but I don't care

I feel the need to clear up that there is no back. this is a shot of the "less nice car area" this is right accross the driveway. no big deal to be there.

For the cost of a tank of gas, you get food, drink, a chance to win a nice car, and time with people who get tears in their eyes when you mention, "working hatch pull down"!

...the road is not really that busy, so what does it matter if its in front or not, franklly i would rather have mind car in the back b/c its closer to the food and pop and thus more people would see it.
i do think the price it a little high...I think that you should do something like its 25 bucks to reg. and than its 35 to reg and get a raffel ticket, and leave the raffel ticket price at 35...that way people think that they are getting a deal when they get the raffel ticket and reg and the same time.

So if the fee is 35 bucks per car, you don't have to pay if you walk to the party? ;P
j/k, besides I'll still be out here in Laramie Wyoming.. Wish I could make the party.. Damn WyoTech.

Owning thirdgens is my hobby. ANY car that is 15 years old is a "ongoing project". It's that that makes it fun. I can have a TPi apart in 15 minutes.........LS1 is a different story........
I decided I may goto thirdgen fest but I'm not bringing the Hawk. Only the 89 formula will be attending.....
I just think $70 is too much for both cars. Plus I really cant afford it at this time or by the fest.......I have a hobby to fund!
But lets say I do bring both cars.....would I get 2 raffle tickets then????

Yes, each registration packet includes one ticket for the car so if you register multiple cars you will get more than one ticket in the raffle. Even if you only register one car you can purchase additional raffle tickets for $35 each.

Tweaked- I tried to send the pics I took last year but got this:
Any ideas?
Also, if you guys are going to be taking 294 down, there will hopefully be a caravan at the Bennigans parking lot at 95th St. and Ridgeland Ave (about 2 miles east of 294). We did it last year and had a decent amount of people show up.

First off the reason why I bought my 91 hawk is because it was my dream ever since i fell in love with thirdgens and I happened to have a shot at buying one so I did.......I dont give a F*** what anyone thinks about my car I love it it and thats all that matters.......

This thread was posted with the purpose of putting the information for this year's event in one post. Since that has been done and its getting more on to the fee, I'm gonna lock it so things don't get out of hand.
Tweaked- I tried to send the file but it is too large. I'll have to upload it to my webspace and let you get the file from there.
