technique for launching with auto trans
im going up against this kid with a hopped up 350 73' Z28 this Friday at the track. i usually get 2.0-1.9 sec 60fts when i race, but lately i havent been able to get those #. i go through the waterbox (the tech guys make you for some reason), and do about a 3-5 sec burnout to get rid of the water and heat the tires up. im running Michelin Pilot XGTZ4s on the Vette (275/4017s). but as far as bringing up the rpms while staging, and either manually shifting the auto or shifting it myself, what should i do? thanks
Always manually shift a 700r4. If you dont they really work like crap. Shift just slightly after peak horsepower. If peak horsepower is at 5200 then shift at 5500 into second and 5300 into 3. Trying to guess where your peak power is is a little hard but i would say those are ok points. Because of the big gap between 1 and 2 always over rev the engine some.
Find out what your converter stalls at with the brakes held and bring the engine up to that rpm. Mash the brakes all the way to the floor. Bring the engine up as high as it will go and then walk it out of the hole.

if they make you drive through the water box, I would have a friend go up there with you. After you do your burnout make sure you are not just driving through the water that collected on your front tires. You may just be getting the tires all wet again.
Your friend can tell you if your tires are dry and sticky.

I've heard about "flashing the converter" My frined did it once in a trailblazer and beat a mustang off the line I was quite impressed with ir. Your brakes can only hold so much. There is a point if you hold the breaks where you rev the engine and it doesn't make the car lift. Kepp revving it up and down in this little range. Then get ready to go and WHAM! you take off like hell.
