I'll be experimenting with this at the track on Friday, but I'll be retarding timing instead of advancing. I already trigger the knock sensor.
I've heard the general rule is to run as much advance as the engine needs, without detonation. This is what I'll be doing. I'll keep you updated.

When I had my lowly 305 in, we set the timing at 36 degrees fully advanced-anything higher and it pinged plus had a hard time turning over. Ran mid 15's. So we started backing it off mainly so it start easier and when set at 32 degrees fully advanced I ran 14.8-14.9 the rest of the day. Each motor will be different so just experiment on a test and tune day. I see too many people changing timing, jets, air pressure, etc. between rounds at the track during racing and 9 times out of 10 they go out the next round cause they have no idea what effect the new mods have produced so they're dial in's are way off. We've always tested at home or test and tunes, then never open the hood (except for cooling) on race day. Buddy gone to nationals twice and been second or third in points at our track at the end of the year for about 4 years running.
ive noticed that i used to have a horrible hesitation and some studdering, but now if i mash the gas (auto trans) i can fry the tires!! now i will have traction probs. thanks guys
