I can stall the car to like 1800-2000...just curious why this is? Its a 84Z28..with a 350, th350 tranny(shift kit)..other mods but these are the only ones that would matter I THINK.

The rated stall speed is only an estimate. The same converter will stall at different speeds depending on how much torque the engine produces.

You also won't see the full stall speed when using the foot brake to hold the car. The only way to see the true stall speed is with a transbrake. The vehicle's brakes can't hold the full torque created.

A transbrake is a special valve body that allows the transmission to be locked in 2 gears at once. Usually first and reverse. When the transmission is locked, no power goes out of the transmission and the engine can come up on the converter's stall speed. Think of the transbrake as a way to launch at higher rpms like a standard transmission however it depends on the stall speed of the torque converter.

The idea is to be able to launch at or near the engine's peak torque. A transbrake launch can be very violent to the driveline. When I installed my transbrake I also had a new driveshaft made, 3" x .083" steel with 1350 series u-joints and I installed a 9" diff at the same time.

Transbrakes are available for many transmission but they're not all the same price. They're in the $200-$400 range. Installing one requires removing and disassembling the transmission for internal modifications.

Powerglide = cheapest
TH400
TH350
700R4 = most expensive (Available from The Kool Guy Shop in Vegas)

There is no street application for a transbrake. It's strictly a race only component.
