First weekend at track
Took Camaro to 1/8 th mile track Friday and Saturday. Friday best was 8.883 @ 80.36 MPH. Saturday was 8.6795 @ 81+ MPH.
Traction is an issue at present. 60 foot time got down to 2.01.......Surprisingly the best run of weekend came when driver nailed it from idle and it stumbled momentarily and then recovered.
Engine is either pumping up lifters or floating valves. Black gook in throttle bores at entrance. Son stated that it starts sounding like its missing at 5800 RPM. This has happened every pass. Never changes. Still pulls but dropps off. On last pass, shifted before misfire and got best time.
Cam is long duration and springs appear to be correct according to head rebuilder. I am using a Summit hydraulic cam of 235 duration @ .050. Initially adjusted lifters same as any number of small blocks that I have rebuilt over the years. Were quiet and engine ran fine during ltesting on street in front of house (rural area). Bumped 6000 RPM limiter many times without issue.
Changed from 10w-30 to 15w-50 for first trip. I am thinking maybe lifters are pumping up. More noticable now with heavier oil. Pushing car through staging may have even made it worse as oil was cooler.
Loosened lock nuts 1/4 turn and no clatter. May try more.

Re: First weekend at track
Real good times for a 305. As you can see in my sig, your outrunning my 350 powered car...at least for now.
Any work on those heads? Sure they're not choking your airflow?
That doesn't sound good to me. I would want to know for sure.
What about ignition modifications...any changes from stock?
Any particular reason you are shifting so high?

Heads are H.O. 305 without swirl ports. Just have 3 angle valve job and bowl work. Milled to improve compression ratio. Cam is very aggressive, 235 duration w/.488 lift. We are using 1.6 roller rockers to improve net lift and compensate for weak head flow.
Car is light, no accessories, A/C, Heater or power steering.
Ignition is Accell dist w/300 series CDI unit.
Just got done zero lashing the valves and engine pulled cleanly to 6000 RPM on burnout.
Will go back to track Friday night.

Yeah very good times, I pulled an 8.300 @ 82.70 and went 13.05 @ 103, so with a 1.8 60' your car would be in the low 13s on a 1/4 mile track. Great times for a 305.:hail:
