Just bought a 3rd gen - what will it run?

Hello,

I'm a newbie to these boards.
I just bought a 3rd gen and wanted to know what range does it typically run in the quarter mile.

The car is a 1988 Pontiac Firebird GTA.
It has the 350 L98 and 700R4 trans with 3.27 gears, aluminum drive shaft, and posi-traction. Completely stock!
Assuming the engine and tranny are in good shape, what will it run?

Thanks for your time

A GTA with a 350 should run a high 14 stock

Since you just got the car, I'm going to suggest you get some sub frame connectors for it (unless it already has them). Others will tell you this should be the first mod you do. I wish I would've known that when I first got my car.

With that said and done, I'd agree with steven90gta, depending on your elevation.

With traction i am thinking mid 14's, maybe on a freak day you'll hit a low 14. Hey its happened before

if you can drive mid-to-low 14's. cmon people, my car is living proof. True it's a 90 and has a couple extra horses, but with just a muffler i ran 13.9.

It should be explained that about the only thing SFC's will do for a 15 second car is take a few squeeks and rattles out of the interior noise situation.

I am running well into the mid 11's pulling the front left with stock suspension and chassis in an 82 Camaro, my only real chassis "mod" being a 10 point cage to make it NHRA legal for 11's.

On 275/50/15 BFG radials, the car cuts 1.8 60 foots with stock location LCA's, stock torque arm, stock front and rear shocks, stock coil springs and with iron heads and the battery in the front of the car.

A lot of people on TGO make a bigger deal about big $$$ suspension and chassis modifications than they should is what I am getting at.

Aren't IROC's a couple hundred pounds lighter though?
I always thought pontiacs were the heavier of the 2 divisions

Junior here forgot to tell you I got this out of our impound yard (auction) for $400 Got a carfax on it and it got just a little over 105K on it as it was not driven much for the last 7-8 years...had a clear record too

Funny story about this car and who we think owned it...but I'll let my son tell that story if he wants too.

He got it running and the engine sounds good and strong...LCD odometer still does not work and looks like the last owner hit something and bent one of the a-arms but I will have to check it out this weekend when I go over to his house....will have to check the subframe recommended mod as mentioned too...was going to buy this for myself but I already have a big project going on my 96 GMC K1500 which is getting a built SC 383 engine

Here's a movie of it blowing away a 90 350 IROC with the tired 130K 350 engine that was in it OH and in 4HI all the way down the track too....new engine/combo should have another 150HP...hmmm?

MOVIE LINK: K1500 vs 90 IROC

Son you need to post some pics of your new ride too

Oh...guess I am a newbie here too Got to love this Forum/Tech treasure chest too!

I know a guy that has the same combo as you. With free mods and a set of headers (rest of factory exhaust modified to fit the headers...horrible job) he ran a 8.7 in the 1/8th mile. That is a high 13-low 14 second pass possibly.

He has low miles though.

theres a reason your car pulls only ONE wheel off the ground.

for a street car, SFCs are a great idea because they keep the car stiff and rattle free... you actually get a smoother ride.

but everyone (that i saw)left out the most important thing you can do when you buy a new car....

change the plugs, cap, rotor, possibly the wires, fuel filter, oil, oil filter, coolent (dont flush unless its really bad, if you flush, use sealing tablets or bars stop leak)
clean the engine bay out so you can see any fresh leaks... and check your timing..

thats generally the first thing id do with a new car...

I had to watch the video to see what you were talking about. I would have guessed the truck would have won anyway just from listening to the Camaro's burnouts. It had no traction even after heating up the tires. When you hear tires squeeling even when trying to do a dry hop, there's no traction. It doesn't take much to beat someone who has no traction no matter how much HP they claim to have.

I've taken out Camaro's and Mustangs with my truck also during street legal nights. Make a bunch of passes running low 15's then get paired up against one of them and hit the NOS button for a low 13 second ride. Not too bad for a daily driven 4600 pound truck but it's still boring compared to my car.
