Last night at the Track!!!
Well tonight was pretty fun. I took the t-top out for its first urn in 2 months, hopin for some great passes....all I had was hopes tonight. BesT i could muster was a 10.41 pass....and theres 2 reasons why it ran that crappy......My carb, a carter, is a POS and 2, my tranny sucks badly. When Id shift to second, it would slip redline and finally, shift into 2nd....by then, any lead I had was long gone......Im talkin, I had 2-3 cars on a turbo CRX and held him till 2nd gear....once I hit 2nd, he just gained about 2-3 car lead on me....I was SOOOOOO Po'd.....I think its time to give up on the 700R4, its really just hurting me bad, because My trap times were like 69-72 MPH and I know its got more there to it, its just being held back. So, Im on my quest for a TH400, considering this car is going to be primarily for racing but a little cruising.
Anyways, at about 930, this newer Cobra was running and he hit 2nd gear and shot his pider gears out all over the track, totally destroying his rear end....as they were cleaning that up, they decided to start the burnout contest that was planned for 10pm start. Anyways, my buddy in his 89 Lincoln decided he'd enter and I said Id do it to have some fun. There was 6 peopel who entered......newer Mazda Miata, the Lincoln Mark VII, early 80's model 240ZX, then me in my Camaro, another one of those older Nissan's, and thenan older Volvo Station Wagon.
The Miata held it for the required 30, not shabby. Then my buddy walked up to me and told me "Lets show 'em what a V8 can do!" So he got out there and they announced his name and man o man, he had the baddest smoke show goin, nearly popped his tire, talkin everyone was snickerin when he got up there in a Lincoln....when he came back around people were in awe lol. Then the 240 did its work, not too shabby. Then, I pulled up through the staging lane and with the open headers, peopel started lookin, got up to the box, they announced my name (That was sooooo sweet), thne I got up on her and let it rip. the Maro had the smoke rollin REAL good, sounded sweet as hell, then my carb started being crappy and started bogging, I feathered it backl up and kept on it and after about 25 seconds, It bogged big itme and I was odne.....Came back around and a dude came up to me, told me not bad, but oculd tell my carb was killin me, complimented my Cragers and car
SO, then the rest ran and my buddy in the Lincoln won pretty much unanimously. I asked the dude who would have grabbed second and he told me most definately mine or the Miata
Definate feel good there, but he shook my hand and told me good job out there...........SO, all in all a good night.
BTW, Gotta give a BIG
to CamaroRUs out there, he did pretty sweet out there and made some great runs....plus he was doin it in style! Anyways, That was the night and the last night of the seson....now to get that 400 Turbo in, Put my HOlley on, maybe some gears and get it ready to be the backup car next season.....You know, in case the RS needs a little more power to push it into the 7's

i would have to agree that the "mighty"
LO3 engine certainly does not ever need a TH400 trans bolted to it.

Lol, Im puttin the new tranny behind the 82 lightly modded LG4....well I guess thats what you can call it lol. Anyways, Ive considered a TH350 but wouldnt I need a differant driveshaft? Reason Im saying this is because I already have the driveshaft for a TH400 installation, all Id have to do is fab up a crossmember of some sorts and put it in....Plus Ive heard TH400's are nearly invinceable, it takes like 600 HP to really start to hurt it, as Ive never actually seen someone race with a 400 Turbo and fry it. Anyways, thats all......BTW< I might be able to get some pics or even a vid of my Burnout t the track the other night....I cant wait to see it from a 3rd person perspective.

Thats the critter. Retains stock 700r4 driveshaft, crossmember, speedo equipment, and torque arm mount. Makes a th350 a direct bolt-in. Thats the way to go. As far as durability, a th350 will take most anything too, and still give you better performance.

Question, in order to retain the 700R4 crossmember, does the TH350 need to be long tailshaft or short tailshaft? Thanks.

If you use the kit that I posted, it is irrelevant. It comes with a 700r4 output shaft. It gets installed into the th350, and then a spacer. Your 700r4 tailshaft bolts onto the spacer, and you have a trans the exact same length as your 700r4. That way the crossmember and driveshaft bolt right up. And you retain your torque arm mount. If you choose the other route, you will need a 9" tail th350. Then you are on your own on the torque arm mount, and all the other stuff.
Just FYI,
A th350 with 6" tail shaft will use the same driveshaft as a 6 cyl 200 trans car. - pretty easy to come by..
Also I agree with the th350, less HP to turn, lower 1st than a 400 and lighter.. not to mention cheaper.
But if it were me I would keep the 700, been treating me well for last 5 years on a stock rebuild
MOst 700 problems in a carbed car come from TV adjustment or throw being wrong - not saying thats what you did.
The 350/400 can live without the Kickdown but a 200/700 can not
live without the TV.

I agree entirely, but he already has a 700, so why not use what ya got? As far as keeping a 700, if it were me, and I was planning serious power upgrades and a lot of racing, it would be gone. Oh, wait, I did plan serious power upgrades and racing, so mine is gone!

I also understnd alot of people have probelms with the 700- but mine has been living through many low 11 high 10 second passes as well as much street abuse.
But I am unwilling to give up my overdrive, but if building a race only car - th350.
Unless you running 9s or better, 400
