Another th350 trashed
Just got back from the track, yet another th350 for the junk man. This time , the case split from the pan on the right side all the way around to the botom bolt on the left side. I'm about ready to remove the transbrake, go back footbraking. This season has been expensive. Two trannys and two rearends. Busted wide open on the forth pass today. It ran a 6.94 with a 1.46 60 ftr on the pass before it blew. I sat and watched many s/pro cars today. Seems that the fast door cars don't really leave that hard. I'm going back to a 3500 converter, to launch at 3000 this time. I double entered my boys 81 T/A and forgot to shift it, never live that one down. I have mine set up with shifnoid and proratchet shifter. How do these guys run powerglides make them hold up? They have to be a weaker tranny than a 350.

My powerglide survives with minimal modifications. It's a softer hit off the line with a 1.76 first gear instead of the 2.52 of the TH350.
Turbo spline input shaft so I can use my TH350/TH400 5700 stall converter. There's a couple of different strength ones. I don't have the top end version.
Dual ring, servo piston.
Steel inner clutch hub. The factory cast version doesn't last long.
I run a TCI pro tree transbrake and launch at 4500 rpm.
Other than that it's just a basic rebuild. I also use a Kevlar band. I don't even use a case saver in mine.
The TH350 just isn't a strong design without spending big bucks. The TH400 is very strong in comparrison. Even the 200R4 is stronger than the TH350.
If you're going to use a junkyard powerglide, look for one with the 1.76 first gear. They were behind V8's. These have the stronger gear set. An aftermarket, straight cut, 1.80 gear set is available. It's considered unbreakable but is also very expensive.

i broke a bunch of t350's when i used to run them.i have now went to glide with 1.80 gear set,10clutch hub and jw case.trans is rated to 2000hp but cost over 4grand.
if i was going to run a 3 speed it would be a t400 for sure.

Pulled the trans today. Pulled it without removing any bell housing bolts, broke the bellhousing all the way off of it. Going to tear it down tomorrow and see if anything is wrong inside. Might be able to use it with an ultra bell. Not putting the converter back in though. Going with a 3500 this time that should get me about 3900 or so. 5100 may have been too much for my car.

No. Standard but new style mount. I tore the trans down today, no damage inside. But the pump drive was busted from being in a bind. Put all the guts in another case. Will be racing again next Sunday. Going to try launching at 3200, and see how that goes.
