I am trying to make my camaro a 10.0 car. I want it to run on pump gas, so I can take it out on weekends. I want to run a roots style blower. I have figured out I need around 600 hp with a small block, and 700hp with a big block. Should I run big or small block? This is what I have laying around, and I am on a budget.
350- Its a 4 bolt main block, not bored, and the cylinder walls look good(it has 20,000 miles on it, and was a crate motor). I will need to buy a forged rotating assembly, aluminum heads, and a blower cam.
454- Its a 1973 2 bolt hi po block freshly bored 60 over. I need a forged rotating assembly(it has 12:1 dome pistons in it now with a cast crank and rods). I would run the iron heads I have to same money(big valve heads, mild porting). I would need a blower cam. I figured that a 100 extra hp would make up for an all iron bib block.
Either way I need to buy a blower, and am looking at probably a 6-71 or 8-71. I think a holley 250 is a little small, but if it will work, then I could go that route as well.
Any help would be great. I want to get this car going really bad.

I would use the 454 and stroke it to a 496 if you are buying a rotating assembly since they cost about the same.
A 10 second, pump gas, street legal, with a blower, door car means you're probably going to spend between $10,000 and $20,000. Is that a budget?
I can't see you doing it for very cheap with a SBC and a BBC isn't going to be much of a saving either.
Want a 10 second cheap car? Build an altered with a mild SBC. Power to weight. It takes less hp to move a 1500 pound car into the 10 second zone than it does a 3500 pound car.
Personally, getting it down into the 10's with factory parts is starting to be on the edge of failures. It's possible, but you're constantly driving a grenade waiting to go off.
It's also not just about the engine. 500 hp won't run 12's if the rest of the driveline can't handle the power or you can't get the power to the ground.
Next question. Have you ever driven a 500+ RWHP street car? I'm not talking about one that gets that kind of power with NOS but one that has that kind of power under the gas peddle all the time.

The car will hae a built th400, and a 9" with 35 spline axles. As for having a street car with 500, yes I have had a few, and drive a bunch more. That is why I was looking to go the blower setup, sense the power really isnt there unless you mass the pedal down. As for 10,000 that is probably what I am going to have into it, so I know its not really a "cheap" budget, but if I can ave a blown camaro with a strong driveline, then I will be happy. As for driving it on the street, it would maybe get driven to work which is 5 miles from my house, the drag strip is 5 miles from my house, and the car show is 19 miles from my house. So not really much street time. I am looking to have it somewhat streetable for the street legal drags at the strip. Stephen, you car is why I decided to build my car. Your car is awsome. If I could get away with running alcohol everyday I would, but that probably isnt going to happen, that is why I chose the pump gas and the blower. Also what problems where you having with the stock block?

Unfortunately my car is as far from a street car as you can get. It's a complete gutted out full race car. No interior, Lexan windows all around, hacked and cut up as required to get things to fit. What you see in the picture is just cosmetic like most race cars are. With the engine in my car, as nice as it would sound, I'd never put it into a street car even if it was converted back to gasoline.Originally posted by ModifierRacing

The factory blocks have their limitations. After toasting a few blocks and crankshafts I finally upgraded to a Dart Big M block. The casting is just so much better than anything the factory ever put out.
