It's not factory, but GM made it.

They were an over the counter part sold through the GMPPC. It was never offered in a production vehicle but SLP put them in the Firehawks. GM hasn't sold them for many years but when they were offered, the selling price was in the $1200-$1500 range. At the same time, an aftermarket 9" was around $1800. The Dana 44 is a 8.5" ring gear which isn't mentioned in the listing.

To spend $900 for a rebuilt disk to disk Dana 44 seem like a good deal. If the price climbs too much then it doesn't become much of a deal when you can buy a better 9", 12 bolt or Dana 60.

The Dana 44 was used in the original SLP Firebird Firehawks. It was also a replacement rear end that GM used for the third gen cars. They are a fairly rare rear end for this application.

Mechams are an aftermarket conversion like the Firehawk, not a factory car. They got their Dana 44s over the counter from GM and swapped them in, too.

Thanks guys, no matter how long I keep this car I learn something everytime I log on here This would be a fairly good rear for a strip car, light and a decent amount of options out there for them, they came in the 90`ish corvette`s didn`t they?

They're more commonly used in 4wd trucks. The Dana 44 used in the Corvette and the Viper is a slightly different animal.

The chunck or center section with the ring and pinion is basicaly the same. But the corvette, has independent axles or IRS: and 3rd gens and the trucks with dana 44's have solid axels.
