"A" vs. "M" shifting
Friday my son was running the Camaro at "Club Clash", where we get 2 time trials. After the first, he said it wouldn't shift out of first gear into 2nd, he had to move it into 3rd, let off the throttle, basically screwed up the run, ran mid-15. We did what we could to check it in the pits, seemed to work okay, so he went out for the 2nd TT, same thing. So, 2 TT's, 2 junk runs, not sure what to do. I told him to do the burnout in 1st, shift it up to neutral, and run it in 3rd. When the shifter worked properly, it ran 14.5's - shifting automatically, I told him to dial 15.0 and see what it would do (I was going to say 15.05, but thought 15.0 would be safe), and be ready on the brakes. Just to make it look like we knew what we were doing, he put a 15.01 on it. Manually he'd been shifting at 5500 RPMs, auto it shifts at 4800.
1st round, he treed the other guy good & proper, ran it out to get a fender on him, the other guy broke out, he ran a 15.05.
Next round he kept the 15.01 on because it was getting cooler, again treed the other guy, who also couldn't run his number, so he backed off to take the strip with a 15.24, but the 1000' was identical to the previous run.
3rd round weather about the same, kept the 15.01 on, but he bulbed, ran it out to a 14.998.
The shifter problem is the stock cable end is cracked, won't shift consistently, so a new Megashifter is on its way from Summit.
But, I thought we did a pretty good job of guessing with no runs in that mode.
Oh, that first round win was also his first round win of his racing career. With .018, .041, & -.002 RT's in his previous losses, I figured it was only a matter of time. . .

My T&T RT's tend to average better than his, I tend to have the better of our best as well, but he's got me on first round RT, no doubt about it.
We run in different classes, so we typically have different T&T sessions as well. Plus, we both like to take one pass in each lane, and prefer the last pass to be in the right lane.
