Next Generation does good

My son, that is, not f-body "next generation".

Third race of the High School series this year running the Camaro, he's had good RT's in eliminations but is awaiting his first round win. This Friday night, 1st TT looked pretty good, but the car was a little slow at 14.61 (DA 9700'). 2nd (and final) TT the car slipped a little in the beams when he staged, so that one wasn't too clean, but car ran 14.56 with 9100 DA.

1st round of eliminations, he's lined up with a car he saw cut a .5 light in TT, DA down to 8900', so he dials a 14.53 and doesn't try to kill the light. RT .092 to .234, he backs off at the traps and gets his first win light!

2nd round, he gets paired up with the #3 in points, a 4th gen Camaro & 2nd gen racer who won the first race of the season. Air's a little better, dials a 14.50, other kid dials a 15.22 but by 330' my son is ahead of him. Backs off around 1000', hits it again, easy .062 to .2xx RT win (the other kid came around afterwards and said his brakes locked up on him).

3rd round he dials a 14.50 and is paired up with a 1st gen Camaro dialing a 11.80. Runs a 14.52 hitting the brakes at the traps to a 11.75 in the other lane, turns out he cut a .009 light to the other kid's .132 light.

4th round, 3 cars left, he gets the bye based on closest to dial in 3rd without breaking out. DA 8400', dials a 14.48, cuts a .010 light and runs a 14.482 - a .012 package! (I don't think I've ever had that good a package.)

Finals, lined up with another 4th gen Camaro that dials a 13.99. He keeps the 14.48. Stages, his light comes down - oops, -.100 redlight, runs a 14.493, she cuts a .139 light and runs a 13.997.

Still, not bad, in my clearly unbiased opinion - same night gets his first series round win, and runners-up.

(Oh, how did I do, you ask? Out in the 2nd round.)

Sounds like he's doing very well and has great potential. Getting the first event win is tough with nerves, then once he does that look da fock out and he'll be on a roll burying them chumps at the tree

Make one thing very clear to him now before he starts a bad habit...do not let him slack anywhere anytime on the track, make him run EVERY round like it's the finals and his life depends on it...that is the ONLY way he's going to mop the competition, otherwise he'll brain screw himself thinking he can back off on "this guy" since he's a chump...and then the "chump" will get the win light. He'll go red and he'll give the stripe back..but if he's not doing that every now and then he's not racing hard enough.

I'm thinking his 2nd round opponent was thinking he had a chump and was lazy on the light - the brakes thing was just an excuse. Hard to say, though.

In the club series we're racing, he bulbed after waiting 6 seconds for the slower car, only to find out the other guy had a .2-something light. So, he didn't want to do that again. But you're right, you can't slack off because the same person that messed up with a .5 light in TT can get lucky and pull a .00x against you in 1st round.

Good to hear that he is doing well. How did you do?

Somehow it doesn't bother me as much as I imagined it might a couple of years ago. I get more congrats when he wins as I do when I win!

right on man, so he's running that friday night series, i've been wanting to come check that out, havent seen the hs classes run in a few years, me and the woman might have to come check him out one of these days....i wish me and my dad had the relationship you 2 do, hell its super rare for my dads cars and mine to even be out together, twice in the last 2 years actually, your doing good with him, should keep him out of trouble if ya threaten his racing

I hope to have a daughter that gets into it, always thought that be cool

My dad died a week before I got the Camaro. Even though I'd moved away from home 23 years earlier, he always kept up on my projects. I've really missed being able to talk to him about it, because it's probably the "best" project of them all.

Those of you who still have your dad, make sure you honor him, today at least.
