Matt, I was searching for something else and ran across this thread, and keep meaning to ask you, what ended up being your fastest 305 combination? What heads/intake were you running? Have you posted a history/evolution type thread/post anywhere? I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in a "I did this and ran that..." type thing.

 

the pass described in the first post of this thread is the fastest pass i made with any of the 305 builds. i was in the process of updating my ignition system when the ls motor stuff fell into my lap and opted to make the change. i'll see about putting together some sort of 305 chronicals at some point, lol.

 

What heads and intake were on it? Any work done to either?

 

ok, lemme reach way back. this combo from top to bottom, front to back:

650 double pumper holley with choke horn milled
holley street dominator intake p/n 300-36, box stock
113's with stock back cut valves and a light bowl blend. 981 comp springs
comp cams pro-magnum 1.52:1 rockers
comp 280H cam (230/230, .480/.480, 110lsa)
10.2:1 (all pistons had same top volume, but there were 3 different valve relief designs lol)
ohio crankshaft forged rods
eagle crank, rotating assembly was not balanced.
hedman longtubes, dual 2.5" h-piped exhaust with a flowmaster wannabe muffler (wouldn't use them now, lol)

700r4
10" ati 4000 stall, with lockup
3.73's
275/60/15 m/t et street radials (first design)

3150lbs race weight
crossfire hood with open inlets.

 

Thanks Matt... the only part that surprises me is the 'vette heads... I always wonder if their light weight makes up for their lack of flow...

 

hard to say. the last 305 combo was with a lightly worked set of 416. still had the stock 1.84/1.46 valves with a backcut in them and went 12.38 @ 108 so they're probably not far apart on flow. the last combo was with a th350, 4000 stall and 4.56's so i always felt weird comparing the two.

 

I had a set of lightly ported ZZ4 heads and that 305 was a rocket!

 

so, through an interesting turn of events, the berlinetta has found it's way back in my hands. I've freshened it up and will be base-lining the car probably next friday (oct 14th) at cecil. Since this day in age has most on youtube and facebook vs the forums, i've started a small series on my youtube channel outlining the "revival" of Kody's berlinetta. My current focus is to get it back to this original PB of 14.67 @ 93, then upgrading it in a very similar fashion to how the white car sat in this very post. So far i've got about an hour and a half worth of content, and will be doing more videos as i go along. It feels like a lifetime ago that we ran this car, and 16 years is certainly a lot of dust to shake off!

You race at Cecil County Dragway? Maybe I’ll see you down there sometime, as that is the track I frequent as well.

Been racing there for over 20 years now. It’s kinda a blast from the past visiting this forum again after all this time.

 

Yes i do. I do not get to go as often as i like or wish to, but we get out there a few times a year. I don't live terribly far from the track (about 35 minutes) so we call it our "home track" these days. If you see me there, please come over and introduce yourself!

So i totally intended to run this car 3 weeks ago, but i got sick. like really sick. i spent 8 days in the hospital actually. Things are better now. not perfect, but better. the good news is, i'm taking this car to Cecil TONIGHT. I have a friend coming along to do some video for me and hoping to finally get this baseline performance episode up. If all goes well, i should have it up by end of the weekend.

In the mean time, if you guys feel so inclined, here's the episode of the white car from 4 weeks ago (1 week prior to when i was supposed to take the berlinetta out). I hope you enjoy!

 

Darn... I can't make it down there tonight. After this Friday, they only really have 2 more open test and tune days left before they close for the season (Sat the 19th and Sat the 26th). I'm hoping to be there both days.

EDIT: Just watched the other video... holy crap! 9.18 out of an all motor/manual trans setup! That's incredible!

 

well, it was HARDLY a good outing if i was thinking i was going to meet or beat the previous best outlined in the OP of this thread some 16 years ago, haha, but it was still a fun time getting to know the car again. check out the video here!

ya know, i'm not sure. i just looked at the original post again and the things i thought were different in the end of my video actually weren't. so here's my thoughts:

after 16 years since the last time it's been race, 8 of which the car basically just sat in a garage not being run:
-the carb has NOT been rebuilt and i think it desperately needs it. but being a holley guy i'm not even wasting time with it.
-there is absolutely something unhappy in the distributor. i'm going to guess the mechanical advance mechanism is rusted up. it's moving some, but definitely not what it should be.

the other thing is that i'm having a problem with getting fuel pressure down below 8-9 psi. i think the return line is just too small. too much fuel pressure can cause an aerated condition in the bowls, which will cause a lean condition. i have a new dead head style regulator already on the way.

keep an eye out for more content as i have a lot of cool things on the shelf already. some of what i'm planning:
-650 double pumper
-edelbrock performer rpm intake
-10" 3000 stall converter
-4.10 gears
-manual steering box
-lighter weight hood
-new 2OTL style exhaust system (NOT slp, lol, i am not spending that kind of money on this car)
-new to me lighter weight wheels and tires

i'm having a great time perusing facebook market place for deals on parts i'd otherwise not be able to afford for this thing either. i've got a big wishlist of things but am really watching what i'm spending.

 

Newest episode of "Playing with slow cars" is up! I detail over 100lbs of weight loss in the Berlinetta, as well as some of the performance upgrades, to include a 10" 3000 stall torque converter.

 

Project B progress coming right along. I've got it running and driving again, and it no longer sounds like wet farts! (yay new exhaust!)

 

3 years later, i have an update! i sold the berlinetta to a friend and he's been enjoying the heck out of it. he's given me the opportunity to "finish" what i started and i managed to get the kinks all worked out, while also making this car an actual dream to drive daily (which he does).

new PB out of the berlinetta achieved. 13.73 @ 99.9mph. the longblock in this car is completely untouched from where it was at the very beginning of this thread. we did some weight reduction, put in a 10" 3k stall, holley 600 double pumper on an edelbrock performer rpm and have fixed a lot of the stupidity in the car (mostly correcting 20 y/o me's "craftsmanship")

and i have zero qualms with keeping this 20 year old thread alive
