Explain this please...

Just got home from bracket-racing at the Atlanta Dragway, running Sportsman class, 1/4mile. My best today was 14.013@97.87. My best from three weeks ago was 13.88@97.25.
In the 3 weeks between I installed a K&N air filter, Motortronic underdrive pullies which gave 24% underdrive, and Mickey Thompson Drag Radials.
I was hoping to break my record today.
It seems I am putting up the same E/T's but my speeds are increased.
The slicks are 1 1/2" taller than my radials. Would one inch make that much of a difference in speed? Every run today posted a new top speed record in my car.

Re: Explain this please...

What kind of stall you have? You need to get that 60ft down. I was geting 1.9s with a wornout bolton 305 with an open diff.

Re: Explain this please...

Your 60' times don't look anywhere close to right man. 2.065 on Mickey Thompson Drag Radials!
Was it spinning bad out of the hole?

If not, then I would look into the torque converter

I'm cutting low 1.60' times on Nitto 555R drad radials, but my suspension is all been replaced with aftermarket stuff too.

Re: Explain this please...

I have the highest stall for a 700r4. I know I'm not spinning one bit. This was my first night on slicks. I used to run radials. I may not be launching hard enough.
I'll be at Silver Dollar Raceway on Saturday. I'll work on those 60's then.

Re: Explain this please...

maybe the highest stock stall. mine is 4000rpm and i'm running a 700r4, and i garauntee it'd either get better 60's or spin like hell.

the taller tire will slow down the acceleration but increase topend charge, which could be one reason for the slighter higher mph, but no drop in ET. more converter is my suggestion. get an ATI if you can swing it.

...and a real set of headers.

Re: Explain this please...

Thanks, i really didn't realize my headers suck. You are the second person today to tell me.
I'm going to launch as hard as I possibly can Saturday. My goal is to to crush my 60fters and make those Mickeys scream. and then casually pull a 13.45.

Re: Explain this please...

Pulled my best 60' - 1.976. Along with my best E/T - 13.823@98.23

I came to the reality that I need a 3000 stall or better. Thats not going to happen soon though. In the mean time I need to work on my R/T's.
I lost twice on the same day because of my reaction. I came closer to my dial in than the other person but they had a better reaction time.
I put 50 psi in my front tires.
I need to start learning how to deep stage. Any suggestions?

Your ET will be slower with deep staging, believe it or not.

Re: Explain this please...

I go on the last yellow. I never see green. And I never red light. My R/T's are consistant. Consistantly .150 or worse.
I was told to bump in one time after the stage light comes on and that I may need to bump in up to three times.
I won't mind if my E/T's are worse. Not while bracket racing.
Maybe I need to leave when the second yellow goes off.

Re: Explain this please...

i leave at the 2nd yellow, you can also play with front tire pressure to change R/T as well as launch rpm etc etc

I got the impression you were more concerned about ET loss, but you're right - if bracket racing, ET doesn't matter.

As long as it's consistent. . .

The problem with bumping in is you never know where you are. If you turn off the top bulb and then stop, you at least know where you are. But bumping after the staged light comes on leaves you in no-man's land, and both your RT and ET consistency will suffer. Varying launch RPM and front tire pressure (even front tire size) makes more sense.

Some tracks/race series don't allow deep staging, so understand what the rules are where you race.

Personally, I have to let the 3rd amber warm up a bit or I'll bulb.

Re: Explain this please...

i leave at the first flash of yellow on the 3rd bulb. consistent .01x's and .02x's. if i anticipate, i redlight. if i wait till it's all the way on, it's a .150 or so.

This advice worked the best. My best light was a .015. I launched as soon as the third amber lit up. No red lights. I even got a by run because of my r/t.
I made it to the semi-finals Saturday night. Out of 50 cars I made it to the final three.
Thanks for the help all.

Re: Explain this please...

**** poor. i got some tuning to do, i think i'm a bit on the lean side right now. the car went 13.45@101 on a 1.84 60'. i'm pretty disgusted. however, my 12.31 pass was in nearly magical conditions. mid 40* temps, low humidity, high barometric pressure, and the track hooked like a motha-trucka. that was done at 2910lbs w/o driver and a hood that fed air straight into the carb.

this time was done with a flat steel hood, stock wheels instead of real racing wheels, and sitting at 3150lbs w/o driver. it was also upper 80* temps and MUGGY. my machinist runs the starting line and he was very dissappointed to see it running poorly. we're also suspecting some transmission issues along with the over weight, hot, muggy conditions. we figured that if the car was set up the same and the conditions were the same, the car would have run some 12.6x's, which is still in the opposite direction of where we were going with it, lol! oh well...sad day. i'm saving up for some new Mickey Thompson ET Drag wheels like what greezemonkey is running and some more power. i'm thinking that once the car is back on a diet, i go on a diet, and some more tuning and it'll be in the 12.5 range again. just not sure how much longer i can take this 305!
