81mph in 1/8 but only 8.9 help!

Finally took the car to the track but like everyone else...gee I thought it would be faster.

The sun was out and the temp was mid 90s so that didn't help. I was running terrible 60 ft times in the .215 range. Like it said 8.90s at over 81 mph.
My launch was basically wait for the last light to turn yellow and nail the gas. She was spining some that way but any type of brake torque resulted in a lot of wheel spin, i.e. that car sat there and spun.

I tried a few small burnouts but it didn't seem to make any difference. Tires are worn street tires so I know it would help to replace with some DRs that I am looking at. How much difference would they make and what else would someone suggest?

I just out ran a 2000ish vette in a street race so I thought it would do a little better. Maybe after you guys share your wisdom it will make the difference.

Thanks!

not to offend you or be rude in anyway but im doing almost that in a 05 Honda Accord with a VTEC V6.......(9.2 ET but broke out b4) have yet to take my camaro out to the 1/8, its to far away and i wouldnt stand a chance with all the V8's with big mods, i can do great with the Honda in the import class and the best part is no fart cannon on it, stock exhaust......how much are you looking to gain time wise, alot of guys are running cut outs, and things like putting bags of ice on the intake between runs makes small difs....the drag tires would help ALOT, hookup is key to a good launch and a good launch is key to low times....GOOD LUCK!!!

OK, you can stop trying to cheer me up now.

It sounds like you have a fine running honda. The modded mustangs were running in the 8.4s and they had slicks and skinnines. There was a stock appearing 2002ish Mach 1 who ran almost as fast as me. Maybe a couple of 100s difference and a little slower trap. He was also on street tires.

Read another post here where the guy was only hitting 77mph in the 1/8 and running 13.4s. I was hoping to hit high 12s with this thing but, I fo sho have my work cut out at this rate.

tuning and shift points etc can make a difference
We changed the jets around on my friends car and didn't adjust shift points ( TH400 ) and this is the result. Nearly identical 60 fts, but it lost a lot down low because it was shifting too early. Haven't gotten back to the track yet after adjusting the shift points.

Your Vortec TPI beat a LS1 Vette in a street race? Had a .215 60ft, 89 mph/8.9 sec in the 1/8...something isn't jiving there.... Did the Vette know he was "in a race", and just not trying?

Re: 81mph in 1/8 but only 8.9 help!

Well considering he asked me to line up and then after I beat him he asked me if I "sprayed him", I'd have to say he knew he was in the race. That is just one of several ls1 cars I've beat in a street race. Also Audi s4 twin turbo, honda s2000, was pulling a 04 cobra through 1st until the cobra missed a shift. The list goes on.

Maybe I am just spinning a lot worse through 1st than I thought I was. The car really didn't "feel" hooked until she barked into 2nd.

I suspect that is the problem. The more I thought about how the passes against other cars went the more I am convinced NO TRACTION. Give it a shot in a couple of weeks and let you know how it goes.

Re: 81mph in 1/8 but only 8.9 help!

you NEED to get that 60ft down. if you can get that to a 1.7X you will be a lot happier, that's what i'm running and got down to 8.18 @ 83. sounds like a driver mod is in order. I could get to a 1.9 on some old nasty street tires in the same car

i know it wont make you feel any better, but i thought i'd add that i ran 8.90's @81 in my stock LT1 camaro on street tires. 60's were in the 2.05 range.
