I'm thinking about drilling a huge hole behind the rear licence plate and mounting a kill switch there. This would be in the rear bumper of a firebird. Just so I could hide the switch when I drive around on the street and take off the license plate for the track. Would it be track legal? I have a battery mounted in the rear, thats why I want to know.

I think if it's behind the plastic even with a big hole, it won't pass tech. It needs to be easily accessed so the safety crew can shut off your car and electrics in case you crash or have some other problem such as a fire on the starting line.

How about behind the center taillight? If i rigged up a way for the middle taillight to be easily removed. Behind there the sheet metal does bulge out quite a bit on a certain part of it because of the hatch motor on the other side. It would be more visible than the other spot anyways, and up higher.

Install the switch inside the car with a removable rod that goes through a hole at the rear. When not at the track, remove the rod and put a plug in the hole. When using a rod like that, push is off. You could even have the rod sticking out from behind the plate so that when the plate is removed, the rod can be installed to stick out the back where it can be accessed.

Use the forum search feature. It's been discussed many times and others have posted pictures.

Where are you going to be running? I ran at Scribner way back when I was in Lincoln. I understand the Scribner track is a hog farm now.

It took a lot longer to get to Kearney when the speed limit was 55. Only went there once.

I drilled a hole through bottom of my liscense plate and bumper cover and mounted it through there, it is only as wide as the liscense plate ring, so if removed I can place a new ring on and hide the hole.

I don't plan on hitting the track a whole lot but probably Kearney, its 2 hours away. Maybe Kansas City if they keep on having the annual LTX shootouts there every year, KC is 3 or 4 hours away. I have not been following Scribner, I heard it was shut down because the owners lease was up but then I heard it might open again, i don't know whats going on with that.

Thanks everyone else for advice. The rod sounds like a very good idea.

I made mine so the rod comes out just under the bumper. This way no holes needed to be driled in the bumper and it is totally undetectable when removed. Years later I ended up having to put a hole in the bumper anyways for the parachute. Oh well. LOL

My brother lived up there at the time, and although he didn't race, he heard what was going on (and what he said was backed up by the track operators here). The owner wanted the county to pave the mile or so of gravel road from the highway to the track. The county didn't want to put up the money to do it. Racers didn't like having to haul trailers through the mud, and were complaining (they did have Lucas series races there, so it's not all small-time bracket racers we're talking about here). The owner and county couldn't come to an agreement, so he shut it down. If they're considering reopening, perhaps the county has realized the revenue impact the track was having. I hadn't heard they might reopen, so that's pure speculation.

I put mine next to the trunk key cylinder, but had to cut some metal to get the rest of it to fit. Its drilled into the plastic, but reinforced to stay stable.
