new mods,What to expect?
I`m having my trans redone cause third gear went out.Having it built here in town by a guy with a good reputation for making tough 700`s.Being built almost Identicals to probuilts,up to 500 or so hp even though I dont need it.Trans cooler,2300-2500 performabuilt 12" lockup stall and adding 3.42 gears.Or should I get more of a stall?Getting some street slicks 255/55/16 I think they are.Should be back on the road next week. What do yall think I`ll gain in the 1/8th compared to my best,if much, and what do yall think it may get in 1/4.Thanks

Re: new mods,What to expect?
I would go with more of a stall and higher gears. 3.73 would be best

Re: new mods,What to expect?
I`m not going for an all out race car obviously sinc I kept my tpi.Ther is only like a 10 percent differance in 3.42 and 3.73 so I cant see it making that much better.Plus i`ve read alot of people saying 3.73 is too much for tpi.As for the stall what would you recomend and why.I dont think I need a 9.5" 3000 stall or anything but I could be wrong. This car sees the track just for fun and test and tune.Stays on the street most of the time and does a decent amount of its time on the interstate. Thanks for the response but would anyone care to answer the original question or tell me if I need more stall.
Re: new mods,What to expect?
I'd go for a a smaller converter in size, like a 10", and with a stall speed of around 2600-3000. It's hard to say what you'll gain, too many variables. Just figure that roughly, for every .1 drop in the 60', you "should" see .15 -.2 in the 1/4.
As for gears, my 91' has a stock motor... and I hate the 3.73's. I bought the car with them so I had no choice there. I have the stock 3.23 gear set from my 4th Gen - that's what is going back in the car. Just my $0.10 on the subject.

Cant the smaller gears generate more heat and give a a mostly sreet driven car drivability and/or mileage issues with a higher stall like that. Why do you hate your 3.73`s?
Re: new mods,What to expect?
I hate my current gears because I tach 2800 RPM at 80 MPH on the highway every day on my way to work. And, at the track my car runs out of motor about the 1000' mark. So, they eat more gas and slow me down. Even heads/cam TPI motors peak around 4600-4800, unless you have a heavily modded set up like Dyno Don/Jerry Who/Kevin 91Z28/etc. That said, why would you want to be much past 5K RPM when you cross the traps if you're peaking around 4600-4800? I have a bet going that I'll pick up about .1 swapping back to 3.23's. (I know I'll win this bet because I picked up almost .15 and 1+ MPH when going from 3.73's in my old cam-only 86'.)

Re: new mods,What to expect?
Well the 3.42`s should gimmie a little over 2500 rpm`s at 80 mph and a little over 2200 at 70 mph.I`ll have to cruise around 70 on the interstate so I can live with that.My car isnt my daily driver like yours is.I see what your saying though. The only tracks close by are 1/8 mile. The closest 1/4 miler is an hour or so away.It may kill my top end some when I do go to the 1/4 mile track, but I do plan on a ported slp runners/ported edelbrock lower upgrade eventually.I hope this can gimmie a few tenths in the 1/8th with the higher stall and 3.42`s compared to 2.73`s.Hopefully around 8.5 with sticky tires.

The 3.42's aren't a bad gear, esp. since you are saddled w/ 2.73's now. I was just saying skip the 3.73's based on my two experiences. My old car had a cam and an aftermarket TPI + all bolt ons. It too slowed down w/ 3.73's.
GL with your project, as soon as my 4th Gen is 100% - I plan to take the 91' off the road for a few weeks to do some fixing/upgrades. I literally have a shelf full o fmods & no time because I drive the car so much. (approx. 350-500 miles per week.)

Re: new mods,What to expect?
What should I expect from or do to my car with this new stall speed. This is my first higher than stock stall converter.I know it could be a smaller one better one,but its the one I got.Do I powerbrake it up to 2000 rpms or untill the tires start rolling over.Open to suggestions

A good converter will net you .2 - .3 in the 60' with traction. As far as technique, you'll have to experiment. Some like to be held a hair above idle and flashed on the 3rd yellow, others like to be held against the brakes as high as you can go w/o spinning the rear tires.
