fuel tank question

I just recently sumped my tank and was wondering what you guys recommend I should do about the inside of the tank. Its recommended that you seal the inside of the tank after sumping it but I have heard from people having problems with sealers pealing off after a few years or so and really dont want to have problems with my fuel system getting ruined or possibly my engine if I go lean. So should I not seal it if the tank checks out on a leak test and leave the inside alone or seal it anyway? Whats the worst that could happen if I dont seal it the inside of the tank it might rust a little bit? but with fuel in the sump atleast at all times the new metal should be good from rust though right? Opinions are appreciated and if anyone has sumped there tank already please let me know what you have done. Thanks for the help.

Re: fuel tank question

I sumped my tank about 3 years ago. I also debated about sealing it or not sealing it, I've heard of people having good/bad experiences either way. I ended up sealing mine and its never created a problem. I did it so I wouldn't have to worry about any leaks or rust. If you clean your tank well before sealing it the sealer should stay on just fine. I had my tank chemically stripped before welding so the metal was nice and clean. Then I cleaned it again before putting the coating on to get rid of any residual grease and grime from welding and handling it. If you have a good filter system you won't have to worry about and pieces of sealer getting into your carb. The first year after sumping the tank, I had a few very small pieces of sealer material in my prefilter but since then its been clean.

Re: fuel tank question

Thanks for the reply! I just bought a brand new tank also so should that factor in if I should seal it or not because the thing is not like a old tank where it might have small leaks or possibly rust out very soon? Thanks again

Re: fuel tank question

I decided to not seal the tank because I know I would have ended up with some problem with the sealer cracking off. Another factor was looking at my original tanks inside and it still looked great so there probably should be nothing to worry about. My question is I have sumped the tank and cleaned it out very well with water and dried it then put gas in it to rinse any water out that was left. I have noticed from maybe when the tank was drying with some water drops in it or maybe when it was just sitting in my basement after be welding the inside of the sump (bare metal) is a little spot rusted. The rest of the tank is fine. Seeing that the sump will always be submerged in gas do you think this will get worst or not be a problem? Can it rust more if it is submerged in gas? I could possibly drain the gas in it and i have the chemical metal ready that suppose to remove rust and leave a zinc coating to prevent it as well but im not sure if it is worth messing with? Thanks for the help.
