Transmission question

This is a question regarding the Tremec TKO 600 and if I need to buy the optional crossmemeber that they recommend. I thought it was pretty much a direct bolt in so why would I need a new crossmemeber? What did you guys do for a crossmember. Can i easily modify the stock one? I just dont want to buy there crossmember and have clearance problems with my x-piped dual exhaust if the crossmember hangs lower. If any one has info or even better pictures that would be very appreciated. Thanks guys

Re: Transmission question

who said it was a direct bolt in? its not. You need an adapter plate for the trans, a ford c6 yoke, a crossmember or mod your own, ect.

if you buy an aftermarket crossmember, like Spohns, good luck with a dual exhaust setup.

the trans crossmember needs to move back a litte and drop about 1/2", im sure with good fab skills you could modify the stock crossmember and mount the torque arm on the tail shaft.

Im assuming your buying this fromt Fortes? I dont believe he sells a crossmember, though he did/does sell a kit to modify a stock crossmember, basicly a set of aluminum blocks to lower and move the crossmember

Other than that is to build one from scratch, anyway you want it.

Re: Transmission question

Thanks for the reply. I guess I stated that wrong as direct bolt in. I know you need the adapter plate, new yoke, etc but the transmission is the same size though correct? thats why I didnt understand the crossmember but its probably because the adapter plate and such that it moves its mounting location. What did you do for a crossmember 86 TA? I probably am getting the tranny from 5speedtransmissions.com they sell the whole kit and have a crossmember as well. Its only 70 bucks i think so i would rather just get that then modify my old one. I was just wondering if any one had this crossmember so I could find out if it hung any lower like the spohn or something which would make dual exhaust a PITA. I dont care if it is like an inch lower or something but just want an idea before I buy. Thanks again.

Re: Transmission question

I actually contacted fortes and they are cheaper and I also didnt know they are very close to my house so I can actually go pick it up and save me the money of shipping. I will go with the adapter blocks for the crossmember so I should be on the right track. Is it true that wou need some special pilot bearing for this setup? He said it is like 60 bucks or something! The other website was selling with the kit like a 15 dollar one so im not sure whats the deal.
