Racing starter issues
Hello third gen come here for help once agian, I have univeral torque starter mini kind for 168 and 153 tooth flexplates. I had broke some teeth off the flywheel i had i baught another very expancive one. The starter came with 2 flat long shims and 2 circle shims i tried to shim it right i even looked as it inngaged into the flexplate looks in the middle. The problem is as u go to crank it makes a loud banging noise like it slips off a tooth well i took a shim out same thing. Also broke a tooth on my band new hays heavy duty flywheel very upset bout it.
Does ne one have ne idea or know the porblem is it not shimed right or could be the starter. Ask ne thing u want ill answer to the best of my ability.

Re: Racing starter issues
To shim it properly, you pry out the drive gearing into the ring gear then measure the distance between the tooth. You should just be able to get a paper clip between the teeth. Add or remove shims to achieve this distance. You can also use half a shim if required.
If you have broken teeth on the flex plate, you'll need to replace it. Broken teeth on a flywheel, you may be able to buy a new ring gear and replace it. Depends on the flywheel style but most have replaceable ring gears.
I use an expensive XS torque starter and had one fail already. The second one I bought was a newer design but I was still having problems with it. I found the clocking bolt loosened off and some housing bolts also came loose. Tightening everything up and the new starter now works like new. Because I'm required to have an SFI flexplate, I need to change it every 3 years even if it's still in good condition.
