Re: a new look

Just be sure to use aftermarket improved parts. My stock Ford 9" caps exploded and ruined everything in the diff...and that was just with a stock internal LS1 and stiff wall slicks. (4.11 gears)

Also, I'm not really sure in the real world the power loss of the 9" is significant enough to even matter. My best trap was 116 which is pretty dang good given only bolt ons with the LS.

Re: a new look

yup. i'm running a stock nodular case with billet caps, so hopefully that won't happen...but the six speed is a new venture, and that case has probably 1000+ passes, all faster than 1.60 sixty. only a matter of time before i'm looking for a thru bolt case.

i have a moser aluminum thru bolt case with less than 50 passes on it. i'll sell it for $300. it has 3.062" bearings, and i am going to have to move up to the 3.25" case for the new spool/axles.

I found this a while back at BIG_MODS' website. Was pretty interesting I thought...

Re: a new look

i really don't like that they didn't use the same gear ratio stock to 9"/s60 for that comparison....

Re: a new look

I have a couple problems with that comparison. First they only compared peak horsepower/torque numbers, I would rather see the whole graph. Second if both the stock rear and a 9" are both in motion it takes very little power to keep it moving at that same speed. I'm more concerned in the rate of acceleration loss becaus that's where the real comparison is. They would have had to use the same car and same conditions to be a more accurate test. If you take the same rear out of a 12 second car and put it into a 9 second car you will see a lot more power loss in the second car even though nothin changed in the rear, your just trying to move the same weight at a lot higher rate of acelleration.

Re: a new look

a magazine did a test a few years ago with converting for weather conditions over the course of a day and ran a 12 bolt, 9" and dana 60 and they all were within .08 of each other in a 10 second car.

That would be a cool read. Can we find it?

Re: a new look

Hot rod did it a few years ago. 12 bolt and 9" were really close. Dana was the slowest from what I remember

I remember the 12v9vs60 and it was nice to see them use the same car.

Yep. Until you get into the high end class racing where every .01 really matters, all the trick/ultra-light drivetrain stuff really doesn't make a noticeable difference.

I've actually run all three rears(60, 12-bolt & 9"), if the 12 ever fails me in the Camaro I will likely go to an S60 simply from a cost-vs-strength stand-point. - Depending on which engine combo & class we often have to run some ballast any way, thus it doesn't matter much.
