One of the local street racers with a real fast turbo car painted his Weld draglites flat black. From a distance it looks like factory steel rims without hubcaps.

they're not really speed rated, and will be replaced before the season is out by a hoosier 27x4.5

Re: a new look
The old VW tires 165R15 were commonly used.
Still not speed rated but good to use for a front skinny are from a Smart car. They use a 155/60R15 on the front and 175/55R15 on the rear.
They are both very short tires. The 155 is 22.3" tall. The 175 is 22.6" tall. For a front skinny, it would be better to have a 24-26" tall tires. The VW tires are 25.4" tall but are normally hard to find. Not a lot of tire stores carry that size.

Re: a new look
no problems at tech, just wanting to go to a lighter tire
i'm going to a bias ply slick as a replacement for my drag radials this season. i want the consistency for the 10.90 class i'm running this year.
27's will fit fine. here's 28's on the same car two years ago:

Re: a new look
I run 28" tires all around on my car, no issues with rubbing in the front, although I did remove that black plastic piece from the wheel wells up front many years ago if it would even matter I don't know.

Looks great like that Matt. - I'm not a fan of solid black-outs, but if you leave some polished accents they can look really good on the right car.
We've had a few body/paint casualties in the past six months with some local cars running on the typical VW "skinnies". Lots of 3200+ lb cars running really fast now-a-days, those low speed rated tires just aren't safe like that.

i mean, i'm not that fast, but it can't be good allowing nearly 3500lbs to go 127ish mph on those tires...i'm working on ways to break the 130mph mark, and i don't want to have a mishap

The fact is that speed ratings are for "sustained speeds" and those should be perfectly safe for quick bursts up to anything reasonable (at least 130, I'd feel fine to probably 140 or 150), and are rated for a higher load then most actual drag skinnies (unless you get like the extra ply ones most are not rated for heavier cars). The other issue is that if you're driving to the track on DR's or Dot tires, I don't believe that any actual drag skinnies are DOT rated and I wouldn't trust any of them in the rain (some DR's actually do OK, and I used to really like McReary dirt track tires for drag use which work really well in bad weather, I know, but in some areas weather on the way to/from the track is a reality)

Re: a new look
i trailer my car...the trip to and from the track is made on 205/75/15 8ply radials
Re: a new look
were they actually related to tire failures or were they just "dude hit something while on those tires?"

The new sportsman SR's are full tread radial and speed rated.
Re: a new look
What size are those wheels, tires, backspace, etc? They look awesome, i have an 86 bird with a pontiac 462 that is begging for some fat tires! And what are the dimensions of the skinnies in front?

Re: a new look
I can see the front tire size right on the tire. 185/80R15. Probably mounted on a 4" rim as that's the typical skinny rim size. The tire is 26.65" tall. It's a radial but unlikely has a high speed rating. Highway driving is fine but prolonged very high speed driving isn't recommended. Even a drag skinny doesn't have a high speed rating however they're not at high speed long enough to heat up.
Before these street skinnies were available, drag racers used VW tires. 165R15 tires but they're very short at just over 25" tall.

Re: a new look
I don't know if I can spend that much, I was going to beef up the rear end that's in it but I don't know how big of a slick I could tuck in the fender? I have a ford 9" also but I'm not sure how much fab it would take to fit?

the biggest i've fit is a 28x10.5 mt et drag, but some have gone bigger with mini-tub

putting a 9" in the car can be done a ton of different ways. with stock suspension racing on the rise, i opted to not do a backhalf on the car and kept the torque arm and such. you can buy just the torque arm mount to weld to your housing from moser or a number of different companies. i believe they also sell the spring perches and other bracketry through moser. i know racecraft does, but they're more pricey than moser.

If yo uare a good welder and fabricator, go for it, if not, buy a premade housing.
9" slick will fit, no problem.

NICE
The car has run 9.1 on 94 pump gas.
