I'm going to Inyokern Drag Strip here in CA on the 10th, it's right next to Ridgecrest CA, altitiude about 2,600 FT. Anyway, I'm going to be running my car for the first time and I had a few questions....I have a 1992 Trans Am GTA with a 305 TPI and the 700R4, BONE STOCK except a dual outlet Flowmaster, TPIS air foil, and a OE replcament K&N. The car has low miles and runs absoulutely mint.

First, would it benifit my to take off my air intake and just leave the opening to the throttle body wide open for max air flow??

Next, I heard it is best to manually shift my 700R4. Now, on a stock 1992 TPI 305, what is my optimum shift RPM???? 4,800 or 5,200 or what???

How should I launch?? Should I just nail it at green or hold my brakes and rev it?? If so, to what RPM?? I'm doing this totally in street trim with my Z-Rated Goodyears too.

Also, are there any other driving tips you could offer me aside from having my gas tank as empty as possible and taking everything out of my car??

Thanks!

getting weight out of the car is always a good idea. ditch your spare tire and only bring about a half tank of gas at most.
the launch is something that you will hafta play with. i launch from idle and some guys bring the rpms up. just play with it and see what difference it makes in the 60ft time on the slip.
same thing goes for the shifts, run it down with it running auto first just to get a base line and adjust from there.

You are all stock? Hmmm
I recommend you shift 1-2 at around 5200, and 2-3 at say.. 5100. Leave the TB snorkel on. What you can do is remove the filter housing, and run the K&N as an open element in the stock location, using the stock filter housing lid to hold it down. That's what I used to do, until I fabricated a cold air induction system. Try icing the plenum between runs, it should be worth a tenth or so. As for launching, DO NOT LAUNCH ON THE GREEN. That will kill your reaction times. Launch on the last yellow, because it takes a split second for the car to break the laser beam after you hit the gas. Try different launching strategies... powerbraking to 1300 and launching, or launching from idle... You'll find one way that works best for you.

dont hit a wall
lol
seriously keep your head on straight, you'd be suprised at how many guys get so caught up in shift points that they graze the wall.

Definitely listen to Mr J about not waiting for the green. Also- don't drive through the water in the burnout box, drive around it. Your front tire treads will hold water and deposit it at the starting line for ya- which will make you break traction when the rears hit it. You can back into the water and then haze the tires.

Get you some NOS Octane booster (the off road formula) and advance your timing about 2 degrees.

Buy a bag of ice and put it on your plenum between runs.

When staging the car, you want to just BARELY turn on the second staging light. Inch forward little by little until the second light turns on.

WHen I still had the Auto, I would power brake it up to abobut 1200 or right before the tires started to spin. On the last yellow, let off the brake and start to gently feather the throttle out.

Look for 60ft times in the 2.1s and 2.0s with street tires. I would expect a low 15 or high 14s out of your car at around 93 mph.

14.6@96.6MPH is really, really, good for that car.. especially considering the small exhaust manifolds, Y-pipe, and 2.73 gears. Very good.

keep in mind reaction time has nothing to do with your 1/4 times. So the first couple a runs just get the rpm where you want and take your time, its easy to get all excited when the lights come on and lose your launch rpm. Reaction doesnt matter unless your racing someone to the finish line.

and no need to melt your street tires down in the burnout box, just lightly brake torque it to haze a little, to clean them.

Thanks, I'll be lucky if I can get any traction with my Z-rated tires. The rubbers so hard I've NEVER been able to even get the slightest bit of smoke off of them let alone getting them warm and sticky They are always braking loose on me......
