Drivers school

Hi all,

Longtime lurker, rare poster....

Anyway, I just wanted to say that if you have a chance to do a high speed drivers school, definitely do it!!!!

I was at New Hampshire Int'l Speedway yesterday with the BMW club and what a rush! I was incredible running on the oval (NASCAR Turns 3 and 4) and the front straight.

And there were 3 f-bodies there. One was a 4th gen T/A ram air, a nice 3rd gen red IROC, and a 79 T/A reminding me of Smokey and the Badit.

Drivings skills are similar yet different than autocross. Of course the speeds are far faster. But here, you have traffic so you can't always see the perfect line unlike autox. Plus, those heavy braking zones take a serious toll so you worry about brake fade.

I was fortunate enough to see a run group where the 79 T/A was in the same group as a 92 Dodge Stealth twin turbo AWD. I was a classic old school versus new school battle. The Stealth was far faster in the turns, but the T/A pulled away slightly on the oval/straight. A couple more laps and I'm reasonably confident that the Stealth would have passed the T/A, but it was a good show!

Top speed for me was 95 mph or so. Instructors were running 105 - 110. We were literally inches from the wall on the front straight. Woo hoo!!!!

So anyway, if you have a chance to do one, definitely take it! I was such a rush!

Would you categorize this as a "fun day" where your club "rented" the track for the day?

I plan to put the IROC on a road course in a similar situation in June. I am very much looking forward to it...

My friend did that with his 91' Twin Turbo vette. Dont ask me how he did it, he boght it off a guy for $18,000. Anyway, he was up against a 92' viper, ferrari maranello, and a ford escort. It was the funniest race i saw all day. Smoked each and every car out there. Ferrari didnt have a chance, viper was real close, and the escort, well lets just say almost caught up when the corvette overlapped the escort 8 times. Vipers top speed 124,viper 118,ferrari 104,escort 79.

KeithO,

Wasn't just a fun day, it was a true school and still a lot of fun.

I'm totally hooked. I definitely will do others.

Just make sure your car is in tip top shape! We had a brand new (only 1700 miles) WRX dump power steering fluid and 2 BMWs blew off coolant hoses.

Good luck to you when you run!
