Tips, Tricks, and weaknesses for first time racer....

Alright, I have a new 350/TH350 in my '84 Z. I've never ran in the 1/4 before and I need to waste all these m*****g guys out here in St. Louis next season. I'm hoping to see mid-13 timeslips by next summer. Here's what I have:

GMPP 350 (285 hp) with Edelbrock Intake, 600 cfm carb, egr, a/c, emmisions removed, open element, the engine details are 72cc heads, 8.5:1 CR, .390/.410 cam. The tranny is a TH-350, 2500 RPM S.C., nice shift kit (5000-5500 shifts) The rear (2.73) and exhaust (single cat) is stock. As well as the suspension (ex. adj. air shocks).

What do I need to get where I want to be. I'm going to be sitting on my Radial T/A's unless I can find some slicks (how much differance are we talking here?). What weaknesses in my drivetrain/suspension should I worry about/fix first.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

first thing to remeber is to have fun.
the next thing to think about is that you have a good bit of motor there and nothing to help it hook. so try to baby it out of the hole a little to avoid wheel spin, any 60' below 2.2 i would consider a victory with your set up.
there are a few little things you can do to help the car, like lowering the rear tire air pressure to 27-30 psi(radials really don't like low pressure), raising the front air pressure to 45-50psi to help the car start to roll easier, adn dropping the front sway bar or just dropping the drivers side endlink to allow the front end to raise more to help with weight transfer.
take you time staging too. if you cna get so you are barely into the lights it gives the car several inches that it can roll before it actually triggers the timing lights to start.
mess with everything you know how to adjust and vary your launches. messing with things is the only way to find out what the car really likes.

you will not have any traction problems, the engine is very mildly setup, i would guess you will be running high 14's that cam is really small and the 2.73 gears and stock exhaust are really going to be killing you.

Cool. Thanks for the advice. How much of an impact will a Mac catback, cat, headers, and y-pipe make? Also which gears should I consiter? I was thinkning 3.42's or 3.73's, this is a daily driver too. Thanks again.
