Cam is too small for me, gonna upgrade. Suggestions...?

Finished my turbo build a few weeks ago, and have been playing around with the tune ever since. I'm relegated to burning chips at the moment, and between that and work it's been a long couple of weeks trying to get the turbo dialed in w/the $8D mask. Engine is a 305 from an '85 Iroc, heads are fully ported irons (416), intake is a fully ported/siamesed stock TPI system w/60lb injectors, tranny is a 700R4 w/PTC 3000-stall (stalls at 2800) and minor upgrades, rear is stock w/3.42 gears out back, redline is 6000-RPM. Current camshaft is the Lunati 218/218 458"/458" @ 110, and after the third chip I got the idle so tame you can't even tell it's cammed...

Pulls really well on the street, but I am running too much stall in my opinion with that cam. I haven't had it at the track, nor the dyno just yet, but its' pulled some pretty fast cars on the street so far. Front seal is leaking pretty bad, and I figured while I am down there why not just upgrade to a bigger cam. Sticking w/flat tappet because I have never had a problem with them, just not too sure if I should run w/the Lunati 224/224, or their 224/230, or another brand within that range. I really am open to ideas, just don't want to go roller, nor with a custom cam because I feel there really is no need to this year....

I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on the Lunati 30111 grind...;

220/230 465"/490" @ 110 (will be running 1.52 comp roller tipped rockers)

If you wanna step up another 300-400rpm or so of peak power provided intake can support it, step up to a 224 cam. Maybe 112 lsa as you get much bigger in duration. It will help keep idle good but sounds like you have it pretty much spot on. I think a 224 cam's rpm range is good for that stall. It should be good for current cam as i run that stall on stock L98's haha. More lift will help bring in more power so i wouldnt go much higher than 224 deg.

I was thinking that too, and I find myself hesitating going with a split pattern because of the amount of work that I did on the exhaust side of the cylinder heads. The single pattern 224/224 @ 112 does sound like it would work very well with my setup...

From the lift, I'm guessing you have a non roller...

Why not spend the coin to get a full roller cam (conversion) and be able to get more power through lift, might even be ok with the duration you have. Probably need to change valve springs with a roller...

Hey Paul. Yeah, running a non-roller cam with the earlier block. Gonna pull the 305 next year and throw in a 355 roller that I am fiddling around with here and there, so I figured I'd save a little coin with the 305 and keep it flat tappet. Have you decided on that blue supercharged Iroc for sale? That thing is freaking sweet...
