Usually depends where your local track wants them. Typically top right of windshield and top rear of driver door. Some tracks also need you to have them on the passenger side so you put them on the top rear of the passenger door as well.
Position them so they're clear and visible to the tower and don't block your vision. White numbers are the best to use as they can be easily seen in the day and night.
Rules state that the numbers should be 6" high but my numbers are only 4" tall and I've never had a complaint from the tower that they can't read them.

At my local track, we needed them on the top passenger side of windshield and passenger side window. I've been to tracks where they needed to be on the driver side window and top of back glass. See where your local track requires them. I believe mine are 4" as well.
