First time autocross today, good times

One of my goals before the 2012 season was participating in an autocross. I didn't know much about it, never driven in one, and had only even spectated during the Power Tour.

After today, I realize its something I need to work into my schedule more often.

I actually finished first in my small class of 4, but overall I was stoked about my time of 35.067! I'm the very bottom line on the board. Nice mix of cars, of course the imports were the quickest and there was a new Coyote Boss 302 that was real impressive.

Great day, learned a lot about my car, and I gotta just say the 3rd Gen suspension may not be the best at everything, but its good at a lot of things. Nail a 1.62' at the strip, bolt up the front 36mm sway bar, and hit the autocross with success. Not many project cars have this much potential right out of the box with stock type design and select bolt on parts.

I went last year to a "training day" for Autocross... got to break down the course and practice different aspects of it... was a lot of fun... and you really get to learn what your car can and cannot do... enables you to be more confident in it...

My Firebird was getting worked on, so I took my daily driver, but I do want to take the Firebird next

Don't wait. Get started now. Especially if you're young. I waited too many years and regret all the time I missed when I could have been doing it. Whatever "it" is.

The car will not be ready till next year. Even then, the carb setup will likely suffer from the sloshing and a EFI setup will have to come in.

It's an autocross, not a Baja 1000. People have been racing cars with carburetors for nearly a century.

Re: First time autocross today, good times

It doesn't matter in the slightest what you drive. In my club we've got Stalkers, Corvettes, a Formula Ford, a supercharged M3, and twin turbo this and that. But we've also got a Prius a Honda Fit a Yaris and a couple of ancient Volvo and Mercedes station wagons and sedans. Plus of course my stock '91 v6 'bird still with original shocks, struts and brakes. They all add up to fun whatever they are.

My 03 trailblazer and 01 silverado 3/4 ton would just be a bad idea. Lol

Although we have a highly modified El Camino and a Toyota X runner which is also used as a daily work truck. He runs with a big box of sand over the rear axle. All depends on the the club.

Re: First time autocross today, good times

true, but both an elcamino and x-runner are every bit as much cars as they are trucks or SUVs.

Re: First time autocross today, good times

I don't think I'd be taking a Suzuki Samarui to the autocross either. Not without the training wheels anyway..

I've just got the factory power steering "cooler", the loop that runs below the radiator. After my second run, my power steering pump was whining badly and the fluid was quite aerated. I needed to let the system cool for 10-15 minutes between laps to keep it in check. Street driving just can't tax a system like a good lap around the track. The brakes worked just fine, I'm running a fairly basic LS1 brake upgrade on the front and rear disc for the 9".

I'm glad you joined the dark side.

I've talked to several people and not many want to race.
